Bilston Urban Village Nature Reserve

Bilston Urban Village Nature Reserve Bilston Urban Village Nature Reserve is a great place to discover wildlife on your doorstep. Throughout the year, the wildlife at the reserve is ever changing.

As ex-industrial land, the area was rehabilitated alongside major local regeneration work (including new homes, a leisure centre and schools). Following this, the responsibility for this green space was transferred to The Land Trust at the end of 2019, with the charity Groundwork West Midlands (based in Tipton) the local managing partner. The reserve is made up of grassland, meadow and woodland ha

bitats, and also contains a sustainable urban drainage system pond. In spring, daffodils, crocuses, and tree blossom brighten up the area after the winter, and primroses begin to flower in the woodlands. Once summer arrives, flag iris bloom around the pond, whilst bees and butterflies enjoy the flowering meadows. During autumn, fruiting trees and shrubs provide food for hungry birds and small mammals, and over winter, fungi can be found across the reserve.

🌿 Help us keep our country parks beautiful

Our hardworking ranger team recently cleared this huge load of rubbish from one of our country parks. πŸ—‘οΈ

We’d much rather see our rangers spending their time protecting wildlife, improving habitats and caring for our green spaces than dealing with rubbish and fly-tipping.

Fly-tipping is not only unsightly β€” it can harm wildlife, damage habitats and create hazards for visitors and our countryside.

When visiting our country parks and nature reserves, please remember:

βœ… Take your litter home if bins are full
βœ… Dispose of waste responsibly
βœ… Never dump or leave unwanted items in our parks

Together, we can help keep our country parks clean, safe and enjoyable for everyone. πŸ’š

Thank you to everyone who helps our ranger team care for our amazing green spaces.

🌳 When trees feel the heat

At Bilston Urban Village Nature Reserve, our trees are an important part of the landscape β€” providing habitat, supporting biodiversity and helping create a greener environment for our local community.

During prolonged hot and dry weather, trees can experience heat and water stress. One of their natural responses is to shed some of their leaves, reducing water loss and allowing them to conserve energy.

πŸƒ Early leaf fall can therefore be a sign that a tree is responding to challenging conditions rather than simply dying.

As our climate brings more frequent periods of extreme heat and dry weather, understanding how our natural environment responds is increasingly important.

🌿 Our trees are adapting to survive β€” and protecting them helps protect the wider ecosystem around them.

🌑️πŸ”₯ HOT WEATHER WARNING – BILSTON URBAN VILLAGE NATURE RESERVE πŸ”₯🌑️

If you're visiting Bilston Urban Village Nature Reserve during the hot weather, please help us protect the site, wildlife and other visitors.

🚫 BBQs are strictly prohibited – under any circumstances. Hot, dry vegetation can ignite rapidly, and a single spark or ember can cause a serious wildfire.

πŸ”₯ See a fire? Keep away and ring 999 immediately. Do not put yourself at risk trying to tackle it.

🌊 Please do not swim in any water at our country parks or nature reserves. Water can hide deep mud, submerged hazards, unstable banks and sudden changes in depth. Cold-water shock can also cause an involuntary gasp and loss of breathing control.

β˜€οΈ Keep hydrated, stay in the shade where possible and avoid strenuous activity in the hottest part of the day.

Please enjoy the reserve responsibly: no BBQs, no swimming, and report fires immediately.

Thank you for helping protect Bilston Urban Village Nature Reserve. 🌿❀️

πŸ¦‹πŸŒΏ Looking back at our butterfly walks at Bilston Urban Village Nature Reserve! πŸŒΏπŸ¦‹

Last month, our Nature Recovery Team welcomed local residents and nature lovers to Bilston Urban Village Nature Reserve for a wonderful day of wildlife discovery.

We explored the meadows and woodland, spotted colourful butterflies and learnt how to identify some of the common species found around the reserve. πŸ¦‹πŸŒΈπŸŒ³

There was also a chance to get hands-on with butterfly surveying and insect sweeping, helping us record the amazing insects and wildlife that make this special place their home. πŸ”πŸ

It was fantastic to see people getting involved, learning more about their local wildlife and enjoying the natural space right on their doorstep. πŸ’š

A big thank you to everyone who joined us! We hope to see you again at one of our future nature events. 🌿

🚫 Reminder to All Visitors 🚫

Please remember that BBQs and open fires are not permitted anywhere on the site.

With the hot and dry weather we've been experiencing, even a small fire can spread rapidly and put people, wildlife, and the surrounding area at serious risk.

If you see a fire or notice any signs of one, please call the emergency services immediately and report it as soon as it is safe to do so.

Thank you for helping us keep everyone safe and protect our beautiful surroundings. 🌿πŸ”₯

β˜€οΈ Hot Weather Warning – Stay Safe in Our Country Parks 🌳

With the hot weather continuing, we’re asking everyone visiting our country parks to take extra care.

πŸ’§ Please make sure you bring plenty of water to drink and stay hydrated, especially if you’re planning a longer walk.

🚫 Please do not enter any lakes, ponds, rivers or other water areas. The water may look inviting, but it can be dangerous due to hidden hazards and changing conditions.

πŸ”₯ No BBQs or fires are permitted in our country parks. Dry conditions can increase the risk of accidental fires, putting wildlife, habitats and visitors at risk.

If you’re heading outdoors, plan ahead, take breaks in the shade where possible, and look after yourself and others.

Thank you for helping us keep our parks safe and enjoyable for everyone. 🌿
