For 53 years, Gordon Johnson has climbed the Quex Clock Tower every single week to keep its historic clock ticking.

While many tower clocks across the UK have been converted to electric motors, Gordon continues the traditional ritual of winding the mechanism by hand, raising the heavy weights that power the clock and its familiar chimes across the estate.

The clock itself was made in 1837, while its hour bell is older still: cast in 1538 and originally from St Mildred’s Church in Canterbury.

More than 180 years after the clock was installed, it still keeps time the old-fashioned way, thanks to Gordon’s commitment to the simple beauty and discipline of winding.

Divine creatures and critters spotted around Quex.

The estate is alive with wildlife throughout the year, supported by our farmers’ commitment to protecting the woodlands, hedgerows and farmland these species depend on. We’ve seen a welcome return of certain species that were once dwindling in the British countryside, including the beautiful Buzzard pictured here.

What a weekend at Quex Park! ⚔️

Renaissance faire UK: The Crossing of Worlds II transformed Quex Park into a world of fantasy from 11–13 September, with incredible costumes, live performances, traders, makers, food, music and immersive experiences throughout the estate.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in bringing the event to life, and to everyone who joined us across the weekend. It was fantastic to see Quex Park filled with so many characters, costumes and adventures!

Here are just a few of our favourite moments from the weekend… 📸
