Think carefully before entering open water.

Heartbreakingly, we’ve seen several fatal incidents involving water and drowning across the UK in recent days, and sadly, the West Midlands has experienced tragedies like these in recent years too.

These incidents have a devastating impact on families, friends, local communities and emergency service responders, and our hearts go out to everyone involved in such tragic circumstances.

With warmer weather here, we know people will be tempted to cool off in rivers, lakes, canals, reservoirs, the sea and open water. But entering any water can be extremely dangerous.

Open water may look calm, but hidden currents, sudden drops, cold water shock and unseen objects beneath the surface can quickly turn what was supposed to be a quick dip into a dangerous emergency.

Cold water shock can affect anyone, no matter how fit or confident a swimmer they are. Even on a warm day, the water itself can be dangerously cold.

⚠️ never jump into unknown water
⚠️ avoid swimming alone
⚠️ don’t enter the water after drinking alcohol
⚠️ keep children supervised at all times and educate them about water safety
⚠️ stick to supervised swimming clubs, where licensed lifeguards/spotters are there to keep people safe.

If you see somebody in trouble in the water:

📞 call 999 immediately and ask for the Fire Service if inland, or the Coastguard if at the coast
🛟 encourage them to - details of which can be found in the link below
🚫 never enter the water yourself.

🚨 It’s Sutton Fun Run week!

Seventeen members of staff from across West Midlands Fire Service are taking on this year’s 8.5-mile challenge, and are making it tougher than ever 👀

For the first time, the team will be pulling TWO vehicles around the course - a fire engine 🚒 and one of our station vans 🚛

If you’ve seen us at the Fun Run before, you’ll know we usually pull one vehicle… but this year we’re doubling the challenge 🏃‍♂️🏃

The team are proud to be fundraising for Fire Fighters Charity ❤️

☀️ Another hot day is expected across the West Midlands today (Tuesday 26 May), with temperatures once again set to soar.

Please take extra care in the heat by following, and sharing our advice, particularly with those who are more vulnerable.

💧 stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day

🧴 wear suncream and protect yourself and loved ones from prolonged sun exposure

👵 check in on elderly or vulnerable friends, family members and neighbours to make sure they are safe and well

If you’re around water today, or at any point during the half-term:

❌ never enter lakes, rivers or canals after drinking alcohol

🏊 don't swim in open water unless its part of a licensed, supervised session where lifeguards, rescue-trained kayakers or spotters will be keeping you safe

🛟 keep children supervised near water at all times, and explain the dangers of water to them

✅ If you find yourself struggling in the water, remember: Float to Live. Tilt your head back with your ears submerged, relax and try to control your breathing while gently moving your hands and feet until help arrives or you can safely reach the shore. Call for help as calmly as you can.

Our crews are always available 24/7. If you need us in an emergency, call 999.

💧 Fallen into cold water? Your first instinct might be to panic, but staying calm could save your life.

Cold water shock can make you gasp, struggle, and tire quickly. That’s why it’s important to remember:

👉 Have a look through the simple steps that could help you survive if you, or someone else, unexpectedly falls into water.

🔹 try to relax and stay calm, fighting the urge to thrash around
🔹 lie with your head back, keep your ears submerged
🔹 stretch out your arms and legs into a star shape
🔹 focus on controlling your breathing until the cold water shock passes
🔹 once calm, call for help or swim to safety if you’re able to.

Even strong swimmers can struggle in cold water. Knowing what to do in those first few moments can make all the difference.

✅ensure your barbecue's in good condition, and never use accelerants like petrol

✅keep an eye on the grill at all times, and keep children and pets well away from it

✅ if there's a fire, call 999 - never tackle it yourself.
