Think carefully before entering open water.
Heartbreakingly, we’ve seen several fatal incidents involving water and drowning across the UK in recent days, and sadly, the West Midlands has experienced tragedies like these in recent years too.
These incidents have a devastating impact on families, friends, local communities and emergency service responders, and our hearts go out to everyone involved in such tragic circumstances.
With warmer weather here, we know people will be tempted to cool off in rivers, lakes, canals, reservoirs, the sea and open water. But entering any water can be extremely dangerous.
Open water may look calm, but hidden currents, sudden drops, cold water shock and unseen objects beneath the surface can quickly turn what was supposed to be a quick dip into a dangerous emergency.
Cold water shock can affect anyone, no matter how fit or confident a swimmer they are. Even on a warm day, the water itself can be dangerously cold.
⚠️ never jump into unknown water
⚠️ avoid swimming alone
⚠️ don’t enter the water after drinking alcohol
⚠️ keep children supervised at all times and educate them about water safety
⚠️ stick to supervised swimming clubs, where licensed lifeguards/spotters are there to keep people safe.
If you see somebody in trouble in the water:
📞 call 999 immediately and ask for the Fire Service if inland, or the Coastguard if at the coast
🛟 encourage them to - details of which can be found in the link below
🚫 never enter the water yourself.
