How to start the fostering hugs.

Thinking About Becoming a Foster Carer? Here’s What the Assessment Is Really Like! 🌟

At Abacus, we do everything we can to make the fostering assessment as smooth and stress free as possible. The process has two parts, and they often run alongside each other:

✅ Stage 1 – Checks & References
We carry out the essential safety checks to make sure fostering is the right fit. This includes:
• Personal references from three people who know you well
• Police and medical checks
• Employment checks (if you're working)
• Local authority checks
…and a few others depending on your circumstances

✅ Stage 2 – Your Life Story
This part is all about you. Over 6–8 sessions, we’ll explore your journey from childhood to now, focusing on the skills and experiences you bring to fostering.
⏳ How long does it take?

The full process usually takes 4–6 months, depending on your situation, we like to get them done as quickly as possible.

📘 Skills to Foster Training
You'll also join our “Skills to Foster” training — four relaxed evening sessions designed to help you understand the fostering task and what to expect once you’re approved.

📝 The Final Step – Panel
At the end, you’ll attend an Abacus Panel. Our panel members — including those with personal or professional experience with fostering and even someone who was fostered themselves — will review your assessment. They may ask a few friendly questions, such as what you’re most looking forward to in fostering.
