Summer Lessons #9 – Own Your Mistakes

You will make mistakes. We all do. A mistake does not define your character nearly as much as what you choose to do next.

When you get something wrong, own it. Don't hide it, blame someone else or waste your energy constructing excuses. Put your hand up, tell the truth and take responsibility. Then do what you can to put it right.

Learn from what happened and make sure the experience changes something. Making a mistake once is human. Repeating the same mistake because you refused to learn from it is a choice.

You may be surprised to discover that admitting when you are wrong often increases people's respect for you rather than diminishing it. It demonstrates honesty, courage and maturity. People learn that they can trust your word, even when telling the truth is uncomfortable. Leadership does not require perfection. It requires accountability.

Own it. Fix it. Learn from it. Move forward.

Summer Lessons #8 Believe in yourself

You are capable of more than you think.
Self-belief is not believing that you will always succeed. It is believing that you are capable of trying, learning, adapting and trying again when things do not go to plan.

There will always be someone stronger, faster, more experienced or more naturally talented. Do not allow comparison with them to become an excuse for doubting yourself. Your competition is the person you were yesterday. Prepare properly. Work hard. Accept that sometimes you will fail. Then learn from it and go again.

Others can encourage you, train you and open doors for you, but eventually there will be moments when you have to back yourself.
You don't need to know that you can do it before you start. Sometimes you have to start before you discover that you can.

Believe in yourself. Then give yourself a reason to.

Meet the Leadership Team: County Medical Support Officer

WO2 Natasha Taylor is our County Medical Support Officer. Her role is to provide specialist advice and support on health and medical matters across the County, working with our teams to ensure appropriate medical planning and individual risk management is in place. This helps us make our activities as accessible as possible, while ensuring the health and wellbeing of both cadets and CFAVs is properly considered and supported.

“Through the close working relationships we have across the County, I am able to put the necessary medical plans and personalised risk management plans in place so that as many people as possible can benefit from what the ACF has to offer.
I am also the County SME and go-to person for matters relating to the health and wellbeing of both our cadets and CFAVs. For me, it is about finding ways to support people to participate safely and get the most from their ACF experience.” WO2 Taylor

Meet the Leadership Team: Adult Training Officer (Designate)

Captain Ryan Tolley is our Adult Training Officer (Designate) and, following a handover period, will take over from Captain Robbie Walker as the officer responsible for leading our Adult Training Team.

Ryan was previously Training Officer and then 2ic for Z ‘Minden’ Company and is also one of the County’s First Aid instructors. He is looking forward to his new role.

“Having started my own ACF journey as a cadet and gone on to become an instructor, I know first-hand the difference this organisation can make. The ACF gives young people opportunities, confidence and a sense of belonging, while bringing together adults who want to give something back to their communities. Summer Lessons #7 – Respect Others

Our Values require us to respect others.

Respect means recognising that other people may think differently, believe differently, come from different backgrounds or see the world differently to us – and that they are still worthy of dignity, kindness and inclusion.

But respecting others does not mean lowering the standards we set for ourselves. Nor does it mean undervaluing our own culture, beliefs or identity. Respect is about making space for difference without surrendering who you are.

Importantly, the respect you show someone is not a measure of their worthiness to receive it. It is a measure of your own character. So consider how you behave, how you speak to people and how you speak about them when they are not there.

Conduct yourself in such a way that anyone observing you would be impressed by the values, standards and character you demonstrate. Respect costs nothing, but says a great deal about the person giving it.

Meet the Leadership Team: County Quartermaster

Captain Chris Dawson is our County Quartermaster (QM). Working directly for the CEO, Chris is the senior member of our Professional Support Staff (PSS) and is relatively new to the role.

As Quartermaster, he is responsible for overseeing the logistical support that keeps the County functioning. This includes the management and accountability of stores and equipment, supporting accommodation and facilities, coordinating the issue and movement of resources, and ensuring our cadets and CFAVs have the equipment and support they need to train effectively.

Much of the Quartermaster’s work happens behind the scenes, but effective logistics are fundamental to everything we do across the County.
