Following the events of this year’s annual Green Party conference, we at the St Helens Green Party would like to weigh in on the motion and make our stance completely transparent.

We at the St Helens Green Party have long been committed to advocating for the safety and freedom of all. We will continue to stand up for human rights, welcome every part of our community, and continue to choose principles over political convenience. Healthy politics allows space for differing views, but listening to debate cannot mean staying silent on systemic oppression. After reviewing this statement, we consider our beliefs align with the Jewish Declaration on Antisemitism (JDA). We vehemently oppose antisemitism, Islamophobia, and all forms of discrimination completely. Our opposition to Zionism stems directly from our desire for safety, equality, and freedom for everyone.

To every resident of St Helens, we say to you as the St Helens Green Party: you are valued, you are welcome and you are safe in our community. This includes everyone, of any faith or none. We vow to make St Helens a fairer, safer and more inclusive place for everyone.

David Yeates grew up in 1970s Ashton-in-Makerfield knowing he was different, but not knowing why. In early adulthood he discovered he was the son of Steve Belcher, a black Gl based at Burtonwood Air Base. In 2002, David travelled to Atlanta to meet his father for the first time, took a DNA test, and was welcomed into his extended African American family.

St Helens Council's decision to not observe Black History Month this year is both extremely upsetting and alarming.

Black History Month in the UK has always celebrated British history and British people. If our elected leaders truly care about the people of St Helens loving and respecting British culture, why are they not endorsing the celebration of literal British history?

Councillor Woodward's statement comes after months of targeting minority groups and a brutal parade of budget cuts. We cannot and will not stay silent when our communities are repeatedly targeted by this council. We cannot allow St Helens and its people to regress. We must educate ourselves and each other, and uplift others where we can.

This time last year, the St Helens Greens had 70 members,

Today we’ve got 355, that’s more than five times as many people that want to stand up for their communities and be part of a different kind of politics here in St Helens.

Over the last 12 months we’ve met plenty of new people that want to help us get involved in campaigns, joined us at events and helped out in our neighbourhoods.

We believe a massive part of that is Zack Polanski’s leadership, as he’s shown politics can be bold, hopeful and rooted in bringing communities (like St Helens) together.
