Warwickshire Freemasons: Weekly Wrap‑Up 🏛️

It's been a warm week across the Province both in temperature and in brotherhood, with 5 excellent meetings to round off May:

Tuesday 26 May
Compass Rose Lodge
A hot Rugby evening saw WBro Rob Banks installed into the Chair in fine form. Shirt sleeves all round, but the heat didn’t dampen the atmosphere or the quality of the ceremony.
A fun Festive Board followed as the Lodge heads into summer recess on a high. 🔨😄

Wednesday 27 May
Ex Cathedra Chapter
New Principals were installed in fine fashion, earning praise from Presiding Officer E Comp Geoff Walker.
All three Principals have held office before, stepping in to support newer Companions progressing through the ranks. Two potential exaltees are lined up for October. 🔺👏

Holy Well Lodge No. 9437
More than 50 Brethren gathered in the magnificent Silchar Building as WBro Amrit Kalyan was installed as Worshipful Master by WBro Bhavan Jhita!
APGM WBro John Kisbey presided before an excellent ceremony unfolded.
The evening concluded with a Festive Board at the Milestone Hare. 🎩🍽️

Vesey Council of Royal & Select Masters
A wonderful night in Sutton Coldfield witnessing the installation of III Comp Adrian Middleton by III Comp J David Evans. A strong and well‑delivered ceremony. 🔺

Saturday 30 May
Warwickshire Light Blues joined the UGLE Quarterly Communications for a fantastic day at Freemasons Hall, even if it was a little on the warm side. 🥵🌡️
An inspiring day of fellowship and looking ahead to the future of Freemasonry. From thought-provoking presentations and a live recording of Craftcast (the Masonic podcast) to exploring the magnificent Grand Temple itself, there was plenty to take away.
A particular highlight was seeing so many Entered Apprentices, Fellowcrafts experiencing QC for the first time, alongside brethren from Scotland and the women's Grand Lodges.

Huge thank you to the organisers and everyone involved!

The Pillars of Provincial Leadership 🏛️✨
Behind every thriving Province stands a dedicated executive team. In Warwickshire, two vital roles ensure our traditions and operations flourish:

The Deputy Provincial Grand Master (DepProvGM) 👔
The "right hand" to the Provincial Grand Master. They manage day-to-day operations, oversee Masonic discipline, and officially lead the Province in the PGM's absence. You’ll often see them representing the Grand Lodge during official visits to local Lodges.

The Deputy Grand Superintendent 📜
The key executive in the Royal Arch, assisting the Grand Superintendent in governing the Provincial Grand Chapter. They focus on mentoring, visiting Chapters, and leading ceremonial teams.

Many of these leaders serve across both the Craft and Royal Arch, ensuring a seamless connection between the two orders. Their expertise and dedication are what keep our fraternity strong, harmonious, and forward-looking.

Ever wondered why Freemasons wear aprons? It actually starts with practical, working stonemasons!

Centuries ago, "Operative" masons wore long, tough sheepskin aprons tied around their necks and waists to protect their clothing from flying stone and sharp tools. When "Speculative" (non-working) members began joining the lodges in the 1600s, they adopted these aprons as a symbolic badge of honour.

Over time, the rough leather evolved into the refined, symbolic regalia seen today. One of the most striking examples is the Royal Arch apron. As the Royal Arch degree developed its own distinct identity in the 18th century, it gained a unique apron featuring a crimson and purple indented border.

At its centre, early aprons featured the gold letters "T.H." (standing for Templum Hierosolyma, or Temple of Jerusalem). Over the decades, these letters merged to form the iconic "Triple Tau" symbol used today, with the familiar decorative tassels officially added in 1843.

Today, whether you are a Master Mason or a Royal Arch Companion, the apron remains a vibrant, unbroken link to a rich heritage of craftsmanship and shared philosophy.

🎪 Out and About: Rugby Bikefest
The Let’s Talk Team braved unpredictable weather at the Rugby Bikefest, but the turnout at our gazebo was fantastic! We received plenty of charity nominations and had immense interest from the public about joining, with several "hot" leads sent to the Provincial Membership Officer. It was a brilliant day fueled by great team spirit and terrible dad jokes.

🏛️ Chapter & Lodge Highlights

The Chapter of Faith & Hope
An unforgettable evening saw Bro. Jawad and Bro. Joe exalted. Despite missing key members, drafted reserves filled vacancies seamlessly. Highlights included Nigel Hawkins' dramatic delivery of the Mystical lecture—literally hurling himself to the floor—and his flamboyant presentation of Companion Marinescu's Grand Chapter certificate.
Composite Lodge Goes from Strength to Strength
At the Rugby Masonic Centre, Robin Singleton was proclaimed Master for another year. Having waited 39 years to reach the chair, the lodge agreed a second year was well-deserved! Delivered wonderfully by Paul Banks, the proclamation sets up a busy year ahead, as the Lodge has initiated four candidates recently.

Fortitude Chapter No 43
A magnificent night at Fortitude Chapter No 43—who controversially claim to be the Province's oldest chapter! Philip Gough was presented by John Handley and inducted into the Z chair by Nigel Hawkins, all under the watchful eye of Chapter Scribe E Peter Welling.

Splendid Royal Arch camaraderie continued at the festive board.

🕵️‍♂️ The Masonic Mystery of Sir Arthur Conan DoyleWe all know him as the mastermind behind Sherlock Holmes, but did you know that Brother Arthur Conan Doyle was a dedicated member of the Craft? His Masonic journey began in 1887—the very same year he introduced the world to Sherlock Holmes in A Study in Scarlet.

📚✨🗝️ A Timeline of Light: Initiation: At age 27, he joined Phoenix Lodge No. 257 in Southsea (Jan 26, 1887). He moved quickly through the degrees, becoming a Master Mason by March of that year.

Brotherhood on the Battlefield: During the Boer War,

Doyle’s path crossed with fellow literary legend Bro. Rudyard Kipling. They reportedly attended a "scratch lodge" together in Bloemfontein—a testament to how the Craft unites brothers even in the chaos of war. ⚔️
🤝Scottish Honors:
In 1901, the Lodge of Edinburgh (Mary’s Chapel) No. 1 made him an Honorary Member after he delivered a stirring Burns Night speech.

14/05/2026

In both Craft Freemasonry and the Royal Arch, effective governance relies on senior officers who connect Provincial leadership with local members. Here is a brief explanation of two key active roles:

Provincial Grand Wardens (Craft): Appointed annually to assist the Provincial Grand Master. Their primary duties are practical: they ensure ceremonies follow proper ritual, represent the Province at official lodge visits, and serve as the main communication link between the Province and private lodges.

Assistants to the Principals (Royal Arch): Operating in the Royal Arch, these officers assist the Grand Superintendent. They actively mentor individual Chapters, provide guidance on operations, and ensure ceremonial standards are upheld across the region.

Both are merit-based appointments that require a thorough understanding of Masonic operations and a significant time commitment to travel and support local members.

The Ancient Roots of Royal Arch Colours

Ever wondered why the Royal Arch uses such vibrant hues of Blue, Purple, and Scarlet?

The tradition dates back over 3,500 years to the biblical Book of Exodus. When Moses was instructed to build the Tabernacle, these specific colours were chosen to represent the very elements of our world:

Blue: Symbolising the air and the vastness of the sky.

Purple: Representing the sea (derived from ancient shellfish dyes).

Scarlet: Embodying the power and intensity of fire.

These colours weren't just for decoration; they adorned the robes of the High Priest and the sacred fabrics of the Temple. Today, Royal Arch Masons wear these same colours to maintain a living link to this ancient history, reminding us of our shared heritage and the elemental forces that govern our lives.
