Being off work due to a lengthy illness or injury can bring with it lots of emotions; worry, frustration and sometimes helplessness.

We understand how important it is for members to feel like they are being looked after and helped back to health during these difficult periods in their lives.

Each year our charity spends around £60,000 on its members doing just that – helping them back to health and fitness.

This maybe in the form of residential physiotherapy or wellbeing breaks at the multi-million-pound treatment centre, St Michael’s Lodge or by providing counselling sessions with a professional team of psychotherapists.

It may also be through our sickness voucher scheme which we have recently increased.

If a member is unable to work for more than 21 days consecutively through sickness, they will now be able to claim £35 in shopping vouchers as opposed to the previous £30 voucher.

A member off sick for more than four months can now claim a further £35 in vouchers. Although not a big monetary amount, it acts as a small ‘Get Well’ gesture from us.

To all our members who are currently off work through injury or illness and maybe facing a long recovery, please get in touch with the Benevolent Fund, we may be able to help with your journey back to health and fitness.

We gave over £11,200 in grants to support members last week.
The Trustees were unanimous in their decision to help three members.
The grants will offer much needed support to two members suffering with complex health needs. The money will enable essential modifications to be carried out at their homes and will make a huge difference to their lives.
An interest-free loan was also given to a third serving member enabling them to get the necessary support they need.
We award charitable grants to members who find themselves with sudden illness, unforeseen expenditure, or financial hardship.
Not all applications can be awarded grants, but sometimes we can still offer a degree of assistance by offering an interest free loan instead. With every application treated on a case-by-case basis, our Trustees are keen to help as best they can.
Interest-free loans are usually as a last resort when a member cannot find funds from any other source.
There are no set criteria for grant approval because every case is considered on its own merit.
Sometimes the lives of our members are tragically cut short. We heard the very sad news last week about the recent passing of retired officer, Steve Knight who we helped following his MND diagnosis.
On behalf of our charity’s Trustees, Operations Committee and staff at the Benevolent Fund we would like to send our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Steve’s wife Sam and the rest of their family at this very sad time.
If you’re not already a member of the Benevolent Fund, please consider joining today, so you can protect your loved ones. We offer lots of membership benefits that support your well being too.

A big thank you to everyone who attended our Annual General Meeting last Friday 15 May.

Our Chairman, John Williams opened the meeting by welcoming the temporary Deputy Chief Constable Jen Mattinson and fellow members to Guardians House.

Our Auditor, Glen Bott and Director of Investor Management at Evelyn Partners, Luke Hunter also attended to give an overview of our charity’s accounts, our recent audit and our financial outlook for the year ahead.

John started the proceedings by recapping on last year’s efforts. You can read all about our charity's work over the past 12 months here: https://bit.ly/3RldLwy

We would like to thank everyone for taking the time to attend our Annual General Meeting this year.

A special thanks to all our members for your continued support over the past 12 months. Your monthly subscriptions are vital to our work and we couldn’t provide the help to serving and retired officers, police staff and their families without you!

As we are now well into the month of May, many of us will be looking forward to a long weekend, future annual leave, and a much-needed rest, but with the current economic climate, it also brings the worry of increased fuel costs, so the May blog from our partners PayPlan discusses that very subject:

Mental Health Awareness week is acknowledged in May and this year the theme focuses on “Action”.
Set by the Mental Health Foundation, this theme explores the practical steps we can take to improve our mental health, aiming for “Action for yourself, action for others and action for all”.

In support of this week’s “Action”, we want to remind members about the help you can receive from our charity.

Benevolent Fund’s FREE Family Adventure Day

Our family adventure day at Blackwell Court, near Bromsgrove will be held on Friday 29 May (the last day of the school half term holiday) and promises to be another great day out.

Blackwell Court Adventure, is a non-profit organisation offering over 20 indoor and outdoor activities, set in 50 acres of beautiful parkland.

The popular event was introduced seven years ago to offer members and their families a bit of old-fashioned fun, away from the daily distractions of devices and enable families to have some quality time together.

As well as the old favourites including Giant Zip Wire, Crate Stacking, Tree Climbing, Dual Zip Wire and Archery, families will be able to enjoy a non-impact game of LASER TAG too.

After an exhilarating day of thrills and outdoor adventure, families can gather around the campfire for a spot of marshmallow toasting and an ice-cream, before heading home.

The charity has 80 spaces up for grabs.

To register for the free event visit Our Family Event page on our website, www.wmpben.co.uk
