Birmingham City Council has written to the government following the announcement of 4,000 potential job losses at JLR, urging Government to work closely with industry and regional partners to ensure that JLR and its supply chain have the support needed.

The Council has called on Government to provide targeted support for Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and the wider automotive supply chain, following the announcement of 4,000 potential job losses.

Council Leaders warn that a failure to act could have significant consequences across communities in the West Midlands, as well as hampering future economic growth within the city.

Birmingham City Council Leader, Cllr Roger Harmer said:

"Jaguar Land Rover contributes £8.7 billion to the West Midlands economy, supporting thousands of local jobs. The potential job losses will impact households and communities across the city and the region at a time where families are already struggling to make ends meet.

"As Birmingham looks to buck the national trends and grow its local economy, this announcement is a setback as we look to tackle the high rates of adult and youth unemployment we are facing.

"The challenges currently facing the automotive sector require a proactive response. The competitive pressure is being intensified by the rapid growth of Chinese vehicle imports, which are reported to have increased by 121% year on year and now account for around 21% of the UK car market. China provides substantial state backing to its automotive industry as part of a deliberate industrial strategy. The UK must now decide whether it is prepared to see strategically important domestic manufacturers compete on an uneven playing field, or whether it will take proportionate action to support investment, innovation and fair competition within our own automotive sector.

"We urge Government to work closely with industry and regional partners to ensure that JLR and its supply chain have the support needed. It has previously demonstrated its willingness to intervene when strategically important industries are in danger, such as when it safeguarded the steel production in Scunthorpe last year.

"The challenges currently facing JLR, the supply chain and the automotive industry are of equivalent strategic importance and require an equivalent response to maintain the UK’s competitiveness.”
