Castle Park

Castle Park We are a group of local volunteers who dedicate our free time to enhancing Castle Park in Bishop's Stortford.

Castle Park is a National Lottery Heritage Funded Park in the heart of Bishops Stortford. The Castle Park Project will transform and unite the two green spaces of Sworders Fields and Castle Gardens into a park for all.

We found lots of life in the Stort on our event yesterday. Highlights were several Bullhead fish, A Ninespine Stickleback and Banded Damoiselle nymphs. We also caught hundreds of mayfly nymphs and many caddisfly larvae, indicating that despite concern about river pollution, the waters of the Stort are in pretty good health! Thanks to everyone who joined in.

Need an activity for half term that gets the kids outside, having fun and learning something all at the same time? 🤔

Then why not book our History Walk for Children on Friday May 29 from 2-3pm! We'll be exploring Castle Park's history, climbing up Waytemore mound and coming back to our library to build a Lego castle - that's exercise, learning and fun! 😆

And all for £4.40 per child - book your place here:

Thanks to everyone who came to our Dawn Chorus walk around the park and Grange Paddocks this morning. We heard a variety of birds with the highlight being a Cuckoo! We also spotted a Muntjac and saw a surprise kingfisher taking a shortcut overland! Special thanks to Robert from Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust for leading us round.

There are still plenty of spaces on our dawn chorus walk next weekend. It's an early start but a peak time to hear the full orchestra of songbirds around the park and Grange Paddocks. Do come along!

Another great conservation session today! We used leftover coppiced branches to create a deadhedge for wildlife and build up a berm in the river to conserve the bank. We then presented our Indies Community Green Award at The Terrace Park Café & Kitchen who have kindly put it on display above the counter. Thanks to all who joined, including some welcome new faces.

Wonderful to see Grey Wagtails feeding a fledgeling in the park. These songbirds can be recognized by their bright yellow underside, grey back and long, wagging tail. They live in waterside habitats where they need on emerging insects like mayflies and non-biting midges. Keep lookout for them and listen for their 2 note 'chiswick' call!

Thanks to all the brilliant volunteers who turned out today! We had a great session clearing heaps of scrub from the castle mound, weeds from the wildflower meadow and litter from the park in the sunshine, followed by well earned brews at The Terrace Park Café & Kitchen ☀️💪
Our next volunteer event will be on the 16th of May which we will advertise closer to the time.
