There's so much going on and we're open to all. With the creation of the Diocese of Blackburn in 1926 (taken from the Diocese of Manchester) the impressive parish church of St Mary the Virgin was raised to cathedral status. The church, which was built in 1826 and designed by architect John Palmer, now forms the cathedral's nave. In the early 1930s, fundraising began to enlarge the cathedral so tha

t the building complemented its newfound importance. By 1938, enough money had been raised and work began on enlarging the new cathedral. Although work was interrupted by the war, it was resumed afterwards and continued through the 1950s and into the early 1960s. Forsyth in 1950, architect Laurence King joined the project and designed the distinctive lantern tower. The lantern tower, which consists of 56 different panes of coloured glass and an aluminium spire, was completed in 1967. The cathedral was finally completed in 1977 and what had been built over the past decades was finally consecrated as Blackburn Cathedral. The North transept contains eight misericords dating from the 15th century. It is not known at what time they arrived at the Cathedral, but they are believed to have originated at Whalley Abbey. This could mean that they were removed to a builder's yard after the Dissolution, but with the cathedral not being built until the 19th century, this allows for the possibility that they had lain unused for some 300 years.

* Blackburn Cathedral to Host Major Flower Exhibition *

‘Parishes in Bloom’ will see churches from across the county bring parish life in flower form into the Cathedral from Friday 21st until Monday 24th August 2026.

All are warmly invited to attend this special centenary exhibition, organised by the Friends of Blackburn Cathedral, which will transform the iconic building with stunning floral displays.

Parishes taking part come from as far north as Bolton-le-Sands, down to Slaidburn, across to Kirkham, and as far south as Standish, alongside many others from right across the region.

Ahead of the exhibition, lead organiser on behalf of the Friends, Canon Andy Pratt MBE, said:

“Excitement is really building ahead of this special event, which is being held as part of the centenary celebrations of both Blackburn Cathedral and the Diocese of Blackburn. The exhibition is only on for four days so we urge everyone to mark the dates in their diaries and to make sure they don’t miss out!

There are so many churches from across Lancashire taking part, and each will showcase life in their parish through stunning creations, bringing to life the amazing talents of dedicated volunteers. We hope visitors will enjoy seeing what a truly glorious county Lancashire is.”

“Our centenary year has been filled with commemorative events and this exhibition will certainly be a highlight of our special year. We are really looking forward to seeing the results of months of planning, preparation, and creative collaboration. The spectacular floral displays created by our friends across the diocese will certainly be a sight to behold.

We are keen to welcome as many people as possible through our doors to experience - through flowers - all that our wonderful county has to offer.”

This event is presented by The Friends of Blackburn Cathedral, an independent charity who raise funds to support projects that enhance the fabric and facilities of the Cathedral. Tomorrow, Saturday August 8th, members of Blackburn Diocese Mothers’ Union from across Lancashire will hold a special celebration and commemorative service to mark the 150th anniversary of the worldwide organisation.

Members will gather at Blackburn Cathedral for an exhibition showcasing the work of the Mothers’ Union in the county, nationally and across the world as they continue to seek to put their faith into action.

Open to all, this event will run from 10am to 4pm, with the display of around 50 deanery and branch banners. Some are the banners are very old, while others are quite modern; all are splendid examples of the skill and vision of those who designed and made them.

In addition, exhibits will also draw attention to the campaigns taken up by the Mothers’ Union to raise awareness of domestic abuse and modern-day slavery whilst others will provide examples of the outreach work undertaken to support hospitals, prisons and refuges.

There will also be activities for accompanied children taking place in the Crypt.

The day will feature a service beginning at 2pm, led by the Bishop of Blackburn, Rt Revd. Philip North, to remember and give thanks for the founder Mary Sumner and her legacy today.

The Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire will also attend the service along with the Mayor and Mayoress of Blackburn with Darwen and the York Provincial Mothers’ Union President.

Susan Willoughby, Blackburn Diocese Mothers’ Union president, said:

"We are absolutely delighted to be marking this very special milestone with a day of celebration at Blackburn Cathedral and we invite people of all ages to come and join us.

The 150th anniversary gives us an opportunity to reflect with gratitude on the dedication of generations of members who have helped the Mothers’ Union become the worldwide and local movement it is today."

Bishop Philip added:

"It is a real joy and privilege to be able to lead the service on August 8th as we celebrate 150 years of the Mothers’ Union.

Throughout those years, generations of faithful members have quietly and steadfastly served Christ by serving others – offering friendship, support and hope in communities here in Lancashire and around the world.

As we give thanks for the vision of Mary Sumner and her enduring legacy, we also look forward with confidence and hope.

The Mothers’ Union continues to be a living witness to God’s love and I give thanks for all it has contributed to the life of the Church."
