Greetings from Chorley! I started my fitness journey 3 years ago by starting off with small changes and goals. Walking has now become something I enjoy and helps my physical and mental health.

A change of scenery, being outdoors and music motivates me.

Susan, one of our Cardiac Rehab nurses, wanted to share this beautiful view of Beacon Fell as a little reminder to step outside and enjoy some fresh air. Remember, exercise isn’t just about going to the gym - every bit of movement counts 🩷

💙 Blue Skies' buys show our care for patients 💙

14 February, being Valentine’s Day is all about hearts – but this week is also Cardiac Rehab Awareness Week and the importance of caring for your heart through physical activity after a cardiac event.

With the help of Blue Skies, our Cardiac Rehab team have funded equipment for home use and for community venues between St Annes and Thornton, enabling patients who would otherwise be unable to attend, to take part in our Heart Failure ‘REACH’ programme. REACH is Rehabilitation Enablement in Chronic Heart Failure. REACH offers a 12-week programme of exercise and advice.

The new equipment includes Bluetooth speakers for the community venues and DVD players so that patients can complete a programme of exercise from the comfort of home. The funding has also paid for a weights rack at the Layton venue.

Maria Boyle, the Trust’s Cardiac Rehab Manager said: “We’ve always had a face-to-face programmes but this initiative has allowed us to offer a home-based service for those who are less mobile”.

One of the programme’s patients said: “I’ve learnt so much about my condition and you’ve shown me how important exercise is for it. I’m definitely going to keep going with the next level of the programme. Thanks again for all your support”.

Thank you to Blue Skies for helping us make a difference to our patients, not just on Valentine’s Day but every day.

In February our team are keeping active in any way possible. One of our Managers/Specialist Nurses Maria B, took a lovely photo of Blackpool Tower at the end of her run last night 🗼🏃‍♀️

"Although I really didn't feel like it straight after work, I did feel so much better for doing it. It doesn't have to be a fast run. I just had to take my time and pace myself." - Maria B

Lighter nights are coming!

🩺 Dry January: the evidence speaks

Dry January isn’t just a trend — it’s evidence-based behaviour change. Research from Alcohol Change UK shows that a single month off alcohol can improve sleep, energy, concentration, blood pressure and insulin resistance, with many people also losing weight and saving money.

Importantly, the benefits last. Participants report lower alcohol intake, improved wellbeing and greater confidence around drinking even 6 months later — with no “binge rebound” afterwards.

A short break can reset habits, improve cardiometabolic health, and support longer-term change. Sometimes, 31 days is enough to make the rest of the year healthier.

Well done to all who completed Dry January and those who are continually addressing their cardiac risk factors.🩷
