📢New Volunteering Opportunity 📢
Join us for a series of volunteer sessions, litter picking in and around the River Ely 🌊
Just a couple of hours volunteering each week can make a huge difference to both yourself and to wildlife 🥰
Everyone is welcome! No past experience is needed: everything is provided.
By signing up as a volunteer, you can:

Due to high level of air pollution in the Aber Valley we have made the difficult decision to cancel today's community river clean. We have spoken to some volunteers who are already discussing respiratory issues and strain due to the conditions caused by the local wild fires.
Smoke inhalation is dangerous, with a myriad of toxic and inflammatory chemicals within. It is a hazard that we have to take seriously, and we must ensure that our volunteers are fully kept safe.
We may not be able to fight this battle, but we will keep fighting the war to improve local river health and support local communities. We need to be fit and healthy to do so.

With autumn on the horizon, the importance of cleaning up our rivers increases! When river levels rise, litter and larger waste items can be carried downstream, blocking water courses and increasing flood risk!

Our Healthy Rivers project helps mitigate this by clearing river channels, lowering flood risk and improving biodiversity 🐟 🦆 🦢🐸

Working with the Aber Valley Environmental Action Group (AVEAG) and with support of Caerphilly County Borough Council, Groundwork Wales will be hosting a river cleanup and litter pick on a stretch of the Nant Ilan in Abertridwr.

Meeting near the river at Hillside avenue, we will be there from 1000 till 1200 on Sunday the 16th August.

We will be bringing a number of waders and equipment for some volunteers to be able to get into the river to remove waste, while others can work from dry land to remove waste that is near the bank or has been left in the rear lanes. If you are particularly keen to get in the river we would ask you get in touch and let us know your shoe size. We do have a limited selection of waders.

Together with our volunteers we will make a difference to the health of the Nant Ilan and the Nant Yr Aber!

It will be a fun day with opportunities to contribute in different ways.
