Today, we mark Firefighters’ Memorial Day, a day to honour and remember the firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Today, we pause to reflect on the dedication, commitment, and courage of firefighters throughout the country, whose actions over many years have made our communities safer. We remember them, we honour them, and we ensure their stories live on.

For us at Avon Fire & Rescue Service, the day allows staff to remember Firefighter Fleur Lombard who tragically lost her life in the line of duty on Thursday 4 February 1996.

April was a fairly quiet month for Blagdon crew with incidents including a humanitarian call and an animal rescue, giving the crew the chance to support people and a few four-legged members of the community too.

While it’s been a quieter period operationally, that’s never a bad thing, it’s a good sign that our community is staying safe.

As always, the crew have been out training, including a ladder drill at Hicks Gate, a hazardous materials exercise, and a water rescue drill down at Blagdon Lake, keeping skills sharp and ready for when they’re needed.

March was a real mixed bag for Blagdon crew, with 12 shouts in total throughout the month. 🚒

Incidents ranged from a car fire, a fire at Weston hospital and alarms reported, to an ambulance assist, a controlled burn, a farmyard fire and a house fire. There was also the large grass fire near Stockhill Woods along with 9 other pumps - so plenty of opportunities for the crew to support our community.

Alongside operational calls, the crew kept busy with training, including a road traffic collision drill, practising line skills and safe working at height, and attending a breathing apparatus drill at Hicks Gate with colleagues from Patchway Fire Station.

A huge congratulations to our Watch Manager, Steve Mills, who reached 30 years of service at Blagdon Fire Station on 1st March 2026.

Three decades of supporting the community, turning out and keeping the crew and things running smoothly on station. In that time, Steve has seen plenty of changes in the job and has some brilliant stories to tell!

Thank you for the commitment, experience, and leadership you bring to our crew - it’s a great achievement and one we’re proud to celebrate.

Here’s to 30 years of service 🚒, cakes on you!!

Today on International Women’s Day, here at Blagdon we are proud to support all of the women across the service.

Niki, currently our only female said, “I’m proud to stand as the only female firefighter on our crew – and even prouder to be part of a team and a fire service that has supported me every step of the way.

Joining the fire service has always been a dream of mine, and thanks to the encouragement and backing of my crew and the wider fire family, that dream became a reality. Their support shows exactly what this year’s theme, ‘Give to Gain’, is all about – when we support and lift each other up, we all grow stronger.”

Here’s to continuing to encourage, support, and create opportunities for the women who want to follow this path too.

February was a quieter month for call outs and only saw Blagdon crew attending a bus fire and car fire.

There’s been plenty of training going on behind the scenes including some casualty care exercises, a BA (breathing apparatus) Emergency drill and some pumping and branch technique practise down at Rickford ford. Some of our firefighters in development also attended Incident Command training in Bath with other members of the service to build upon their skills.

The month was rounded off with the village lantern parade where the truck welcomed people at the finish line!

Today, we remember Firefighter Fleur Lombard QGM, who was killed in the line of duty 30 years ago. Fleur was just 21 years old when she died while fighting a serious fire at a supermarket in Staple Hill.

Her incredible bravery was recognised with the Queen’s Gallantry Medal and the Chief Fire Officer’s Commendation. In 2024, her legacy was further honoured with the Elizabeth Emblem, presented by His Majesty The King.

This afternoon, our Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Matt Cook alongside Fleur's family, serving firefighters and retired colleagues will lay wreaths at Fleur’s memorial in her honour. At 1:04 pm, the rest of the Service will observe a minute of silence as a mark of respect. Fleur’s dedication continues to inspire us all.

2026 kicked off with a bang with Firefighter Richard Veater qualifying this month as a competent firefighter. Huge congratulations to Rich for all his hard work over the last two years of being in development, it’s great to have another fully trained crew member at the station.

January has also seen a flurry of activity for Blagdon 23 station.

From a skip fire, alarms reported and an animal rescue to a large fire in Bristol, two road traffic collision incidents and a gain access, there’s been plenty of variety for our crew.

Along with the shouts, we’ve also done numerous breathing apparatus drills, tactical vent training and spent some time learning the importance of teaching children and young people about fire safety and the roles of the fire service.
