Blagdon Firefighters

Like the rest of Avon Fire & Rescue Service, and fire crews across the UK, August was another busy month for Blagdon station, turning out more than 25 times. 🚒

As well as providing plenty of standby cover at stations across the area while crews attended incidents, we had a real mix of shouts of our own. These included a large barn fire, a farmyard fire, a fire in a wooded area, a vehicle fire, grass fire, two water rescues, alarms, assisting the police, numerous non-permitted bonfires and a large industrial fire in Locking.

August certainly kept the crew on our toes, particularly with summer holiday season meaning we were a little lighter on numbers at various points throughout the month!

Training obviously continued too, with drills including a BA emergency self-rescue, pumping with the light portable pump (LPP) and animal first aid, as well as a visit to station from our Group Manager.

It wasn’t all work though – we also fitted in a bit of fun with a Chew/Blagdon stations vs Chew Hedgehogs cricket match. 🏏

A big thank you go out to our families and employers, whose support and flexibility help make it possible for our on-call crew to be available when we’re needed, particularly during busy periods like this one.

And finally, a thank you to everyone who’s been vigilant during the prolonged hot, dry weather. Taking a little extra care with bonfires, BBQs and anything that could start a fire really does make a difference, particularly when crews across the service are already busy. 🔥

Winscombe Firefighters, Yatton Firefighters, Blagdon Firefighters and Bedminster water rescue specialist team were called to assist in a water reacue this evening. It's not just fires that we respond to.

🚨💨There's another strong smell of smoke across our area this morning.

We are aware that some residents are reporting seeing and smelling smoke across the area.

The smoke is believed to be linked to significant fires across the country, with prevailing winds carrying smoke across our area.

If smoke is particularly noticeable in your area, we recommend keeping windows and doors closed where possible as a precaution.

With conditions currently very dry, we are urging everyone to remain vigilant and take extra care to help prevent fires.

If you see or suspect a fire, please call 999 and ask for the fire and rescue service.

Please share this information with friends, family and neighbours who may be affected.

After a few quieter months, July was one of the busiest we’ve seen this year so far for Blagdon crew. 🚒

Over the course of the month we responded to 22 incidents, from grass fires and alarms reported to a barn fire and gain access alongside supporting at larger incidents including the fires at Avonmouth Recycling Centre and Weston Hospital. We also provided standby cover at neighbouring stations across Avon, helping to maintain fire cover across the region while other crews dealt with ongoing incidents.

In addition to our operational calls, training continued, as always. This month the crew took part in a live fire exercise with a crew from Patchway station, as well as drills covering road traffic collisions, ladder work and fireground set-up to keep our skills sharp and ready for when they’re needed.

With the warm, dry weather continuing, we’d also like to remind everyone to take extra care with BBQs, campfires and anything else that could accidentally start a fire. A little extra caution can go a long way in helping to keep our community safe this summer. ☀️🔥

Today, we mark Firefighters’ Memorial Day, a day to honour and remember the firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Today, we pause to reflect on the dedication, commitment, and courage of firefighters throughout the country, whose actions over many years have made our communities safer. We remember them, we honour them, and we ensure their stories live on.

For us at Avon Fire & Rescue Service, the day allows staff to remember Firefighter Fleur Lombard who tragically lost her life in the line of duty on Thursday 4 February 1996.
