Ray Palmer - standing this Thursday 🌹🐝
…………………
Some people on Facebook have - understandably - said that they know nothing about the candidates, so I wanted to introduce myself as the The Labour Party and Co-operative Party candidate for Bognor Regis West and Aldwick in the County Council election.
I moved to Aldwick four years ago. In my ‘main career’ I worked in the court system, working with judges and lawyers, and with wider responsibilities nationally and across the South-West. Later I was an Independent Member of a Police Authority, holding Chief Officers to account for performance, and I chaired Community Affairs and Crime Prevention Panels.
I was a Non-Executive Director of a very big NHS mental health trust, with specific responsibility for patient and carer liaison. My voluntary roles included reviewing the detention of seriously ill ‘sectioned’ mentally ill patients, I was also Secretary of Portsmouth CAB for several years, and I have coached youngsters to prepare for job interviews. I have also been an active campaigner against sea pollution by Southern Water.
In my private time I have authored books about my family history, and for many years I played guitar in a rock band across the south of England. I’m married, and have three children who tell me they are grown up.
I believe that all of this prepared me well for the role of Councillor, while I am no stranger to the bureaucracy that inevitably come with the role!
I’ve supported the Labour Party for as long as I can remember, and I joined the Party because I was concerned at the growing distance between those that had resources and access on the one hand, and those that had neither on the other. I believe I can contribute towards a re-energised County Council with a Labour majority, but if that doesn’t happen then I can continue to challenge the ruling party from a far better position than Facebook!
I hope that you think carefully about your vote, and remember that it’s not a General Election. Let’s hope too that the campaigns of all parties in the last few days will be conducted with politeness and respect.
