Officers from the Littlehampton Neighbourhood Policing Team have been working hard to tackle criminality across Littlehampton Town Centre as part of Operation Sonar, in addition to the surrounding area.

Throughout August:

✅ 8 arrests for a range of offences, including theft, robbery, drugs offences, driving offences, and breach of a community order.

✅ 10 stop searches conducted.

✅ 2 illegal electric bikes seized.

✅ 1 illegal electric scooter seized.

✅ Quantities of controlled drugs, including co***ne and cannabis seized and recovery of prohibited offensive weapons

✅ Multiple patrols undertaken, some in partnership with Arun District Council's Community Protection Officers.

✅ 2 Section 34 Dispersal Orders authorised for Littlehampton seafront over two weekends – 6 dispersal notices issued.

✅ 8 Traffic Offence Reports issued.

✅ 2 cars seized under Section 59 powers.

These results highlight the continued commitment of local policing teams to disrupting criminal activity, removing dangerous items from our streets, and keeping our communities safe.

Our officers remain dedicated to tackling crime and anti-social behaviour and will continue to take proactive action against those who seek to cause harm within our communities.

Neighbourhood Policing Team officers recently attended the Out and About sessions at Water Lane Park following reports of anti-social behaviour that had caused disruption and concern for parents and activity providers.

Following recent reports, we are increasingly seeing the illegal and dangerous use of electric bikes and e-scooters in public areas, including roads, pavements, and pedestrian zones. Many of these vehicles are not road legal, uninsured, and are often ridden without helmets or proper training—putting both the riders and the public at risk.

What you need to know!
E-scooters are classed as motor vehicles under the Road Traffic Act 1988, meaning that the rules that apply to motor vehicles, also apply to e-scooters.

It is illegal to use a privately owed e-scooter on the road or in public spaces, such as parks, street pavements, and shopping centres. If you own an e-scooter, you can ONLY use it in on private land, such as in a garden, but you must have the permission of the landowner to do so.

If you use a privately-owned e-scooter in public, you risk the vehicle being seized under S.165 Road Traffic Act 1988 for having no insurance.

Only electrically assisted pedal cycles (EAPCs) are classed as road legal, and can be used without a licence or insurance if you're 14 or over, but they...
- must have pedals that you can use to propel it
- must have an electric motor that can run continuously at a maximum power of no more than 250 watts
- must have no electrical assistance once you reach 15.5 miles per hour (mph)

If your electric bike fails to meet any of these requirements, it needs to be taxed and insured as either a motorcycle or moped

Our priority is always community safety, and we're aware of the nuisance that the anti-social and illegal use of these vehicles are causing within our community.

We are working hard to conduct patrols, complete proactive enforcement and gather information in order to tackle this issue. We are appealing for witnesses after a motorcyclist was seriously injured in a collision with a car on the A29 at Westergate on Friday afternoon, 21 August.

A silver Volvo XC90 and a black and grey Honda 125 motorcycle were involved in the collision at 3.50pm in Westergate Street, junction with Orchard Gardens.

Witnesses, and anyone with dashcam footage, are asked to call 101 or email [email protected], quoting serial 1090 of 21/08.
