An extract from this week's Bognor Observer column, from the Mayor of Bognor Regis...

"We’ve experienced exceptionally high temperatures this week as the heatwave has continued. With weather warnings still in place, please take care in the heat and check in regularly on anyone who may be more vulnerable, including older people, young children and those with underlying health conditions. For guidance on staying safe during hot weather, please visit the Met Office website or the West Sussex County Council summer safety webpage.

Before the temperatures soared, Bognor Regis enjoyed two fantastic events last Saturday. The annual Armed Forces Day began with a parade organised by Parade Marshal Colour Sergeant Aden Huff and led by the Littlehampton Sea Cadets Band. Veterans, Sea Cadets, Army Cadets, Air Cadets and Air Scouts also took part. The parade was followed by a Drumhead Service and the Rededication of HMS St Barbara.

During a ceremony in Waterloo Gardens, Veterans Badges were presented to recognise the service of former members of the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force. Live music and Army Cadet Force displays on the Esplanade proved very popular, with many residents attending, including the Lord-Lieutenant of West Sussex.

The Bognor Regis Town Crier, Jane Smith, was joined by seventeen fellow Town Criers from across the UK and Belgium. Following a proclamation and tribute to our Armed Forces, the Criers paraded to the Seafront Bandstand for the third Bognor Regis Town Crier Competition. I was delighted to serve as one of the judges, assisted by my Mayor’s Cadet, First Cadet Nevaeh Kane. After an excellent standard of competition, awards were presented back at the Town Hall. Thank you to all who participated, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back in 2028.

Next Sunday, the popular “Drive Through Time Motor Gala” returns to West Park for its 13th year. Running from 12pm–5pm, the free event will feature more than 200 vehicles, live music, a KidZone, charity and craft stalls, and live coverage of the Formula 1 British Grand Prix from Silverstone. We look forward to seeing you there."

🔴 A red heat-health alert is in place for the South East from 1am on Wednesday 24 June to 11pm on Thursday 25 June.

Very high temperatures are expected, including overnight. This level of heat can seriously affect people’s health, including those who are usually fit and well.
Older people, young children and people with health conditions may be more affected, so please take care and check on anyone who may need support.

You can help keep yourself and others safe by:

☀️ Staying out of the sun during the hottest part of the day
💧 Drinking plenty of water
🏠 Keeping your home as cool as possible
👒 Taking water, sun cream and a hat if you need to go out
🚗 Checking before travelling and taking extra water with you
🌊 Taking extra care near the coast, rivers and open water
👥 Checking on friends, family and neighbours who may need support

Bognor Regis Town Council were delighted to host its Town Crier Competition on Saturday at the seafront bandstand, welcoming 17 Town Criers from across the UK (and Belgium), for a day of colour, tradition and entertainment.

Hosted by Bognor Regis Town Crier, Jane Smith, the competition drew enthusiastic crowds who enjoyed two rounds of competition. In the first round, criers celebrated their hometowns, while the second round focused on the theme of ‘Seaside Memories’.

Competitors were judged on accuracy, diction, inflection, volume and clarity and content, with additional awards presented for ‘Best Dressed Crier’ and ‘Best Dressed Couple’. Following the competition, prizes were awarded at the Town Hall by the Mayor, Councillor Paul Ralph, and Jane Smith.

Jane Smith said: “I feel very humbled by the strength of the field of Town Criers who attended this year’s competition. It was wonderful to welcome our friends from Belgium, and everyone had a fantastic time. Some were visiting Bognor Regis for the first time, while others were delighted to return.”

The Town Council extends its sincere thanks to our wonderful Bognor Regis Town Crier Jane Smith, our competition judges including the Mayor, Mayor’s Cadet First Cadet Nevaeh Kane, Town Force and Town Council staff, Armed Forces Day organisers, RAFA Club Branch 381, Rock Choir, Darrell Hardy of Whittington’s Bandstand Seafront Kiosk, Arun District Council, Dawnie’s Bakery, and everyone who helped organise and support the event.

Thank you to all who attended and helped make the day such a success. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for the next competition!

Update on local government reorganisation.

Thank you to everyone who took part in the government’s second technical consultation on local government reorganisation, which closed on 15 June 2026.

The government is now reviewing all representations. A decision for our area is expected (but not guaranteed) before the summer parliamentary recess on 16 July 2026. Current timelines remain in place, with elections to the shadow unitary authorities planned for 2027 and the new authorities launching in 2028.

There are no immediate changes to our services, as all eight West Sussex councils will continue operating as usual until 2028.

We’ll continue to keep you updated as the process progresses.
