Our crew have been out in the local community this evening giving water safety advice to residents, particularly the younger generation, who got involved in practicing throw techniques of rescue equipment. This appeal comes after the tragic events that have occurred over this bank holiday. We have also installed a water safety board at the Peter Fiddler Nature Reserve.

☀️ Hot weather = tempting water — but before you dive in, think twice. That cool-looking lake, river, or reservoir could hide serious dangers.
🚫 Cold water shock
🌊 Strong currents
🪵 Hidden hazards
🤢 Risk of illness

Open water may look inviting but please consider the dangers and do not be tempted to cool off in lakes, reservoirs, rivers or quarries!

If you get into trouble in the water, remember "Float to Live":
✔️ Lean back
✔️ Spread your arms and legs
✔️ Stay calm and float to regain control

❗ Can’t swim? Float and shout for help.
📞 See someone struggling? Don’t go in — call 999 immediately.

If you do find yourself in trouble in water and resist the urge to panic.

If you see someone struggling in the water, your first instinct might be to jump in, but that can put you in danger and at risk of drowning too!

Remember Phone Float Throw – it could save their life ⬇️
📞Phone 999 to get help
🗣️Tell them to stay calm and float on their back
🛟Throw rescue equipment to help them float until emergency services arrive

Knowing what to do if you find yourself in difficulty can save your life. ‘Float to Live’ is a way of calming the panic you feel when you do get into difficulty which can lead to drowning. Calming your breathing, laying on your back in a star-like shape with your arms and legs out and floating. You can then wait for your breathing and heart rate to return to normal before shouting for help. You can view a RNLI video on how to ‘float to live’ here. https://youtu.be/BrseCksaLpo

At 20:41 hours on Thursday 12 February, firefighters from Clay Cross, Chesterfield, Alfreton, Bolsover, Ascot Drive, Long Eaton, and Dronfield stations were called to a building fire on Chesterfield Road in North Wingfield.

On arrival, crews found a large fire coming from the front of the building.

Supported by an aerial ladder platform and command support vehicle, firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used several hose reel and main line jets to extinguish the fire.

Nobody was in the property at the time of the fire, and no injuries have been reported.

Derbyshire Constabulary were also in attendance.

Fire crews initially left the scene at 05:45 hours this morning (Friday 13 February). Clay Cross firefighters returned later at 09:00 hours for a reinspection and a fire investigation is scheduled to take place later today.
