Join us on Saturday 24 October as we celebrate Black History Month with a day of films and creativity.

The day starts at 11 am with activities happening across the Central Library and Museum building. Full programme below.

Film screenings:
11 am – 1.30 pm: The Hate U Give (2018)
2 – 4 pm: If Beale Street Could Talk (2018)

1 – 3 pm: Craft activity for families

Throughout the day:

Our Book of the Week this week is... Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro!⭐📖

Klara and the Sun is a dystopian novel set in the future. It follows Klara, an artificial friend who wants to find the perfect home. She is purchased by Josie, a lonely teenager who is ill as a result of being 'lifted' - a process that enhances intelligence at a physical cost. Will Klara be able to help Josie and make her better?

Theatre over October Half Term🎭

The Jeweller’s Daughter is a theatre show full of celebration and culture. It tells the story of a little island in the Indian Ocean called Zanzibar; of a girl whose family were forced to leave, and the welcoming community they then found.

Based on a true story and with lots of games, colour, costumes, music and memories– The Jeweller’s Daughter aims to celebrate difference, bring joy and encourage us to learn about others experiences.

Workshop activity begins at 10:30am which leads into the show at 11am, the same happens at 1:30pm leading into a performance at 2pm

📣 Black History Month at Bolton Museum

Explore Black History at Bolton Library and Museum through inspiring stories, unique archive collections and community events.

📖 From our archive:

In 1850 James Watkins, an escaped slave from the United States, came to England seeking safety and freedom. He settled in Bolton and a local printer helped publish his autobiography, a moving account of a man born into slavery. An original copy is preserved in our archive.

Watkins gave public lectures across Bolton, including to workers from the cotton mills, where he explained the links between slavery and the cotton industry.
His work helped raise awareness of the realities of slavery across the borough and inspired local support for the anti-slavery movement.

🎉 Celebrating Black History Month at Bolton Museum

Black History Month is an opportunity to explore stories like Watkins', and Bolton's complex connections to slavery, industry and the fight for freedom.

Visit Bolton Library and museum on Saturday 24 October, 11am - 4pm, for a day of film screenings, hands-on crafts, and conversations with local community groups as we celebrate Black History Month.
