Hannah Mitchell Foundation

Hannah Mitchell Foundation A broadly-based campaign for Northern regional democracy - covering the North-east, Yorkshire and Humber, North-West regions. Join us! We are also on twitter.

Celebrating a great Northern working class feminist, socialist and cooperator. The Foundation was formed in 2012 to campaign for devolved government in the North of England. We are a cross-party forum for the development of a distinctive radical politics, rooted in our ethical traditions of mutuality, co-operation, community and internationalism. We want to work with a wide range of organisations

to build the case for directly-elected regional government for the North based on the principles of democracy and subsidiarity, social equity and justice, and sustainable development. Hannah Mitchell (1871-1946) was an outstanding working class socialist and feminist who spent most of her life in the North-West: in Bolton, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester where she served on the council for many years. Our website is being re-launched. We will be glad to supply a speaker for your meeting. We can do zoom! Contact: [email protected]

As we aprpoach the 80th anniversary of the D Day Landings I thought I'd share this picture of Jim Hirst, father of my good friend the late Valerie Hirst. Jim was a great guy, only met him a couple of times but a gradely Huddersfield chap. The picture was published, I think, in the national press. Very hard to imagine what they endured.

Welcome to 'The Northern Salvo', merging 'The Northern Weekly Salvo' and 'Lancashire Loominary'. A bit like the old 'Salvo' really. There's stuff on our recent trip to Bath and Forest of Dean, the ULEZ controversy, Labour caution, Booking Office closures and of course my new book 'Lancastrians'. There's a piece on on 'eminent Northerners' Mary Higgs and Solomon Partington, and a short report on progress at Station House, Kents Bank. I'm building up a list of colloquial names for trains (e.g. 'Pilling Pig', 'Delph Donkey', 'The Rattler' etc.). If you know of any, I'd love to hear from you! Even better if you can offer an explanation for the name. And greetings to all my friends over on 'the dark side' today, August 1st, Yorkshire Day.

Here's an important article by Ian Martin of the 'Same Skies' think tank in Leeds, looking at issues around Englishness, regional identity and - who knows - a future independent North!

Jake Berry's comment about Northerners' cultural proclivities may (emphasis on 'may') have been taken out of context but its a common prejudice that us Northerners care more about 'league and football than 'high culture'. Which is boll###s. The Halle, Opera North, Royal Liverpool Symphony Orchestra...and so much more. Our choirs, bands, orchestras....forget stereotypes, The North has a proud cultural tradition and a very modern and innovative cultural range
