Do you know where to go when you need urgent healthcare? 🏥

When you or someone you care about becomes unwell, knowing which NHS service to use can help you get the right care sooner and make sure emergency services are available for those who need them most.

📞 NHS 111 – If you’re unsure what to do or where to go, NHS 111 can assess your symptoms and direct you to the right service. It’s available 24/7.

🩺 Urgent Treatment Centres – For urgent, non-life-threatening problems such as sprains, suspected broken bones, minor injuries, infections and some burns.

🦷 Urgent Dental Care – For urgent dental pain or problems. If your dentist is closed or you don’t have one, Greater Manchester’s Urgent Dental Care Service can help. Call 0333 332 3800

👁️ Urgent Eye Care – For problems such as sudden vision loss, painful or red eyes, flashes and floaters. Always contact the service first rather than simply walking in.

🧠 Mental health crisis support – Call NHS 111 and select the mental health option for urgent mental health support. If there is an immediate risk to life, call 999.

🚨 999 / Emergency Department (ED) – For serious or life-threatening emergencies, including suspected heart attack or stroke, severe breathing difficulties, severe bleeding or loss of consciousness.

We’ve been working with the Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance on some important new videos featuring our amazing clinical staff who support people affected by breast cancer.

The videos will help raise awareness of the importance of looking and feeling your breasts every month, keeping up to date with your breast screening, understanding what a mammogram involves, and knowing the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.

We can’t wait to share more with you soon.

💙 “I didn’t realise you could be a nurse and not wear a uniform, still out there caring, just in a different way.” 💙

A former nurse who once spent years caring for patients on the frontline is now helping transform healthcare behind the scenes, continuing to make a difference in a new way.

After more than 15 years working as a nurse, including roles in theatres and the Emergency Department, Programme Manager Sarah Ashworth has taken a career journey from clinical practice into procurement and innovation with our estates and facilities partner, iFM Bolton.

With support from colleagues, she began to learn more about the world of procurement, working closely with theatre teams to manage medical devices and supplier contracts.

Drawing on her clinical experience, she was able to help ensure staff had access to the right products at the right price while maintaining high standards of patient care.

“What I value most now is the ability to influence change in a meaningful and lasting way. My impact is no longer limited to individual patient interactions. Instead, I can contribute to improvements that benefit patients, staff and services across the organisation."

To mark Day, our Resuscitation Team are hosting a stand on the main corridor at Royal Bolton Hospital until 2pm today.

They're offering staff, patients and visitors a chance to:

❤️ Learn how to find an AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
❤️ Practise using an AED in a safe environment
❤️ Build confidence in responding to a cardiac arrest
❤️ Find out how the devices help save lives

Whether you are refreshing your knowledge or learning something new, the team will be on hand to answer questions and provide practical demonstrations.

Drop by and take a few minutes to learn a skill that could help save a life!

The Baby Memorial Garden at Royal Bolton Hospital was glowing last night (15 October) as dozens of people came together to light candles and remember the lives of babies who sadly died during pregnancy, at birth, or in infancy.

Our Wave of Light service is held every year to mark the end of Baby Loss Awareness Week.

It was a gentle evening for people to focus on remembrance, love and hope. During the Wave of Light at 7pm, people around the world lit candles in memory of babies gone too soon.

During the service, Deputy Head Chaplain, Reverend Catherine Binns, said: “We gather here under the open sky to remember the babies who are no longer with us, to honour their lives, and to support one another in love and solidarity.

“This is a space for all – whatever your beliefs, background, or experience. We are surrounded by nature, by light and by love. Tonight, we remember.”

People in Bolton who have been affected by baby loss are invited to share their heartfelt memories on an online dedication page, as we mark Baby Loss Awareness Week.

The online Much Loved page allows families to upload messages and pictures to help keep the love and legacy of their little one alive.

Donations to Our Bolton NHS Charity are entirely optional, but any support would be deeply appreciated and will help the charity continue providing comfort and care to families affected by baby loss.

The parents of Alfie James, who was born at Royal Bolton Hospital, have shared their own message and thanks to the midwifery teams who supported them during such a difficult time in their lives.

“When we gave birth to our beautiful Alfie James, the bereavement team and the bereavement suite we stayed in gave us something we will forever be grateful for — time.

“We truly cannot thank the staff enough for everything they did for us during the darkest and most heartbreaking time of our lives. A special thank you to Bereavement Midwife Seema Kala, who has been our rock and our shining light throughout a time that felt so incredibly dark. Her kindness, compassion and continued support will always hold a very special place in our hearts.

“Even now, the bereavement team continue to support us on our journey as we await the arrival of our little rainbow baby girl. Their care hasn’t ended with our loss — they have continued to walk alongside us, and for that we will always be grateful.

“Alfie will forever be our son, forever loved and forever missed. Thank you for giving us the space, support and precious memories that allowed us to say goodbye to our beautiful boy.”
