Health and care staff work hard to care for us. Racism should never be part of their job.

Whether it’s a direct insult or throwaway comment, racism in any form is harmful and unacceptable.

One of our consultants, Jeff Kwartz, has joined NHS colleagues across Greater Manchester to create a short video highlighting the reality of racism experienced by staff

Watch the ‘No Space for Racism’ campaign video and find out how to make a stand against racism.

Processing 6,000,000 tests a year, Clinical Biochemistry offers a very broad range of different tests which includes immunology and serology as well as routine biochemistry tests such as hormones, inflammatory markers, electrolytes, tumour markers, and various tests of organ function.

This area is highly automated but Biomedical Scientists have evaluate all abnormal results; considering the clinical details, previous results, and sample quality; to ensure that results that are sent out are accurate.

Our Specimen Reception area is staffed by a team of Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLAs). This is an incredibly busy area as all specimens initially arrive in reception before being sent to Microbiology and Cellular Pathology.

Specimens for Blood Sciences are booked-in here onto the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), an essential step to allow all the analysers to recognise the sample and associated test requests.

Our staff here check each sample and request carefully to ensure that the right patient receives the right test.

We’re home to a regional Antenatal Screening laboratory, which provides screening for Down’s syndrome, Edward’s syndrome and Patau’s syndrome in pregnancy.

This team serves a wide area, processing 1st and 2nd trimester screening samples across Greater Manchester, Cheshire & Merseyside, Lancashire and the North Midlands, and 2nd trimester screening samples from Scotland.

Our team work efficiently to provide pregnant patients with a calculated chance of their babies having a trisomy disorder, allowing them to become informed and make decisions regarding their pregnancy and further testing that is available.

They process 60,000 samples a year.

We’re celebrating Biomedical Science Day!

The day recognises the vital role of our biomedical scientists and healthcare laboratory staff.

They provide critical contributions to the NHS in Bolton by diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases through laboratory testing and research.

Throughout the day we’ll be shining a spotlight on them, starting with Microbiology who provide timely identification of bacteria, viruses and fungi from a wide range of different specimen types.

As well as identification, the team carry out antimicrobial sensitivity testing so that clinicians can select the most appropriate antibiotic for their patient.

The lab processes 300,000 samples a year!

The Mayor of Bolton has raised thousands of pounds to support Royal Bolton Hospital’s Critical Care Unit garden project.

Councillor David Chadwick chose Our Bolton NHS Charity as one of his three chosen mayoral charities, after receiving life-saving care on the unit in 2024.

The generous donation will help with the creation of a special garden for patients on the Critical Care Unit to enjoy the outside air in a peaceful and beautiful space during their recovery in hospital.

Councillor Chadwick said: "As my health gradually improved I was able to be taken down to a memorial garden, which after spending so long in hospital was wonderful to feel the fresh air. Something we all take for granted – until we can’t.

“The Unit has been given their own piece of land and I hope the money I am giving them today will enable them to create a new garden, which will offer reflection and tranquillity, and with any luck a bit of Boltonian sunshine!”

Happy Pride Month 🥳🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Pride Month is celebrated every June to recognise the LGBTQ+ community and their contributions to society.

For us as an organisation it’s about celebrating diversity and making sure our staff and patients feel safe and supported, no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Just last month our colleagues from .bolton attended Bolton Pride to share important health messages with those at the event and making sure they know how to access our services when they need us.

When you use the right NHS service, you get the right treatment sooner.

The first thing you should know is which service you should use for your symptoms.

If you’re not sure what to do or where to go, go to NHS 111 online. It’s available 24/7, 365 days a year.

Our Emergency Department should only be used in a life or limb-threatening emergency. Please help us by sharing this post!

We've shared some really helpful advice about local NHS services on our website: https://www.boltonft.nhs.uk/services/emergency-department/
