Little Button. A Big Reminder. ❤️

This small wooden button was given to me by the mother of a young man who sadly died in prison.

She reached out to me looking for support during one of the darkest periods of her life.
Even in her darkest hour - she showed strength, and took the time to think of others and fought for answers for her and the family ❤️

I still carry this button with me, not because of what it is, but because of what it represents.

Over the years, I've come to realise that technical knowledge and compassion should always run side by side.

Anyone can learn the law.
Anyone can be compassionate..... But the real skill is combining the two.

When people come to us, they are often navigating a world they never expected to enter.

Whether it's an inquest, a police station, a court case or a personal crisis, they are often carrying fear, grief, confusion and uncertainty alongside the legal issues.

Our job isn't simply to deal with the legal process.

Our job is to guide people through it.
To help them understand.
To listen.
To support.
To ensure that whilst we deal with the legal complexities, we don't add to the emotional burden they are already carrying.

A good representative should be able to navigate the legal process whilst never losing sight of the human being at the centre of it.

Because behind every case is a person.

And if someone leaves a difficult process feeling more informed, more supported and stronger than when they entered it, then we've done something worthwhile.

That's what this little button reminds me of every day.

I struggled with knowing how to help people back in 2020.... After an horrific deal I had to deal woth that I would never wish upon anyone ..

Had it not been for a very good friend of mine — Irish Imy New , Imran Ali — I honestly do not think I would have found the strength to stand tall and support others the way I do today.

Now is the time to give a voice to others.
VOTE IMRAN FOR OLDHAM+!!!

People do not need my voice when they have Imran, because Imran Ali is the voice of the community.

That is exactly why I believe Imran Ali for Werneth Councillor is the right choice.

My only regret in all of this is that I am not in Oldham, because as a woman fighting the system and struggling to have her voice heard, I would have Imran by my side every single time.

💜 Stalking - The Reality Behind The Headlines 💜

Stalking is not romance. It is not persistence. It is not harmless obsession. It does not always mean someone hiding in the shadows or peering through your curtains.

With the way society is now, and the rise of social media and the internet, stalking is evolving.

It does not “just go away” if you ignore it.

It is fear. It is control. It is exhaustion. It is the constant feeling that someone will not let you live in peace.

What many people do not see is the hidden toll:
🔹 Repeated unwanted contact
🔹 Court battles and endless stress
🔹 Anxiety every time your phone rings
🔹 Looking over your shoulder
🔹 Isolation,
🔹 Changing your usual daily life
🔹 Trying to rebuild while someone tries to pull you backwards

Too often victims are told to ignore it, minimise it, or wait until it gets worse.

We need better awareness. Faster action. Stronger protection. And a clear message that stalking is serious.

⚖️ Mark Bates Inquest – Why This Work Matters ⚖️

The jury concluded that failures within the prison system *significantly contributed* to the unfortunate death of Mark Bates at HMP Lowdham Grange.

Behind every headline is a real person. Mark was 32 years old. He was a son, a father, a loved one — not just a prisoner number.

The public should care because this case raised serious issues many never see:

🔹 Failures in welfare checks for a vulnerable prisoner
🔹 No documented evidence of proper staff training
🔹 Poor communication at staff handovers
🔹 Missed psychiatric review opportunities
🔹 The growing danger of Spice in UK prisons

I stood beside Mark’s family throughout this inquest because families deserve support when facing large institutions and painful truths.

This work is not glamorous. It is long days in court, preparation until early hours in the morning, listening carefully, challenging where needed, and making sure families are heard.

Justice is not always about punishment. Sometimes it is about exposing failings, demanding change, and giving a family answers.

Mark Bates should be remembered.

🔥 Why I Refused To Stay Silent in the face of Injustice 🔥

I investigated steroid use in policing because I could not ignore what happened to Andre Moura — especially after hearing the harrowing screams and seeing the mobile phone footage captured that night by his neighbour.

I interviewed that neighbour. A vigil was later held in Andre’s memory — because it is never just one life lost, it is a family left behind, children without a fathers, loved ones lose someone irreplaceable, friends and an entire community carry the pain.

I helped find the right solicitors, gave support, and stood beside those affected — because I know how frightening the world can feel when you are suddenly thrown into something unimaginable.

Then came revelations that an officer involved, PC Christian Bolger, had been convicted of supplying drugs and would have been dismissed had he not resigned.

How many warning signs were missed?
How many truths stay buried unless someone asks?
How many times does it happen with no accountability until tragedy strikes again?

I will always fight to uncover the truth.

Two weeks of evidence.
Detailed legal submissions.
And now… we wait.

Sitting in a Coroner’s Court while the jury considers its conclusion is a very specific kind of pressure — the kind that reminds you exactly what’s at stake.

This inquest, into the death of a man at Lowdham Grange prison, is about far more than procedure. It’s about answers, accountability, and a family who deserve the truth.
Every question asked. Every challenge made. Every detail examined — all of it matters in moments like this.

Now, the responsibility lies with the jury.

I truly hope the outcome delivers the justice this family deserves.

📌 CASE OF THE WEEK

⚖️ Assault — or Self Defence?

Police arrested my client after an allegation of assault causing injury.

On the surface it sounded simple:
Client assaulted the complainant and caused injury.

My client was even prepared to admit the assault. WTF! - not on my watch!

So I slowed things down and broke the law down with him.

For an assault, the police must prove unlawful force. - the type they often use themselves...

That word matters — 👉🏼 unlawful.

I went through the elements of the offence and the defences available, applying them directly to what had actually happened.

My client had been attacked first.

Under the law of self-defence, a person can use reasonable force that is proportionate to protect themselves from unlawful violence.

Once my client understood this, the interview strategy changed.

I prepared a structured statement, clearly setting out the defence and addressing the legal points the police would need to prove.
I pointed them where to investigate to see that my client was innocent of assault...

Then I stopped the interview becoming a fishing expedition.

The result?

The case did not progress.
No Further Action!

This is why the police station stage matters.

It’s not just about being present — it’s about understanding the law, applying it to the evidence, and protecting your client properly.

📌 CASE OF THE WEEK

⚖️ Attempted Murder — WITHOUT A BODY

Police arrested my client on suspicion of attempted murder — one of the most serious allegations in criminal law.

For attempted murder, the law requires proof of specific intent to kill.
Not suspicion. Not assumption. 👉🏼 Intent.

I remained on duty for 38 hours, working through disclosure and challenging the evidence.

For the first time in my legal career, I was confronted with police attempting an “emergency interview” without legal advice — something usually reserved for terrorism cases or situations where someone is missing and there is an immediate threat to life.

So I did what defence lawyers do.

I went back to the books, studying until 4am, preparing to challenge the decision.

When I arrived at the station, I challenged the senior officer and the evidential basis before even being allowed to speak with my client.

The police then applied for a 36-hour detention extension — something that must be heard before a Magistrates’ Court.

Working closely with a senior barrister on call, we examined whether the police had lawful grounds to keep my client detained.

And yes… this was happening in the middle of the night.

We prepared.
We challenged.
We defended.

The result?
The extension was refused.

That decision changed the direction of the case.

I remained on the matter for continuity of defence, supporting my client through custody and providing Advocacy Assistance at the Magistrates’ Court.

Serious allegations require serious defence — from the police station onwards.

⚖️ PRISON SENTENCES JUST CHANGED ⚖️

You’ll hear:
“People only serve 33% now…”

- And think — that’s not right.

Here’s the reality:
👉 They’re released earlier
👉 But the sentence isn’t over
👉 It continues on licence

Breach it?
- You go straight back inside.

⚠️ The problem?

- Most people don’t actually understand the rules.
- And the system doesn’t always explain it properly.

🔥 From a defence point of view:
- This isn’t about being “soft”
- It’s about people being managed and controlled outside prison
— with a high risk of being recalled.

That’s where advice matters.

*Because one mistake… can undo everything.
