🚫 Never enter the water to rescue someone.
πŸ“ž Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard if at the coast, or Fire Service if inland.
πŸ›Ÿ Encourage the person to float on their back.
🌊 Always stay away from the edge and supervise children near water.

Recruit Course 01/26 has successfully completed the water rescue part of their training πŸ›Ÿ

Both syndicates put their skills to the test, covering still water rescue response, tethered swim rescues, throwline deployments and reach rescues. The recruit firefighters worked through realistic scenarios with their instructors acting as casualties.

With at least 15 people losing their lives in water-related incidents across the UK in recent weeks, preparing our firefighters to respond safely and effectively is essential in keeping our communities around Merseyside safe.

Today we share the heartbreaking news that our UK ISAR search and rescue dog, Vesper, has passed away following a short period of illness.

Vesper was far more than a working dog. She was the trusted companion and search partner of MFRS dog handler Niamh Darcy, and a beloved member of the Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service family.

Originally bred as part of a police dog programme, Vesper's gentle nature meant she was destined for a different path. In 2020, Niamh recognised her potential and welcomed her into our search and rescue team. From that moment on, Vesper excelled in every challenge placed before her.

As part of the UK International Search and Rescue Team (UK ISAR), Vesper played a vital role in deployments across the world, including the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Morocco. Her extraordinary ability to locate signs of life in the most challenging environments helped bring hope to countless people in their darkest moments.

In 2024, Vesper's courage, dedication and service were recognised nationally when she was crowned winner of The Kennel Club Hero Dog Award at Crufts. It was a fitting tribute to a dog whose impact reached far beyond our Service.

We are immensely proud of everything Vesper achieved and grateful for the lives she helped save. Her legacy will live on through the people she helped, the teams she worked alongside, and the memories she leaves with all who knew her.

Thank you Vesper 🐾❀️

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service's Prevention staff and operational crews were out in force today at the Albert Dock in Liverpool City Centre to engage with the public and talk to them about key water safety messages after a series of tragic water incidents across the UK in the recent hot weather.

Visitors to the Dock were able to view demonstrations of water rescues using throw lines and rescue swimmers and a demonstration of how to use a throw line themselves should the need arise.

Prevention teams reached out to the public and gave them valuable advice about how they and their loved ones can stay safe near water.

Just remember, FLOAT TO LIVE:
🌊 Tilt your head back with your ears submerged
🌊 Move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat
🌊 Float until you can control your breathing
🌊 Only then, call for help, swim to safety or continue floating until help arrives

If you see someone struggling in the water, your first instinct might be to jump in, but that can put you in danger. Instead, remember:
πŸ“± PHONE 999 for help
🌊 Tell them to FLOAT on their back
πŸ›Ÿ THROW rescue equipment to keep them afloat until emergency services arrive

Although the weather may have changed, the sun will be back soon enough and we want to say thank-you to all the people we met today- stay safe in the water.

Thanks to all of our staff today who took part and got very wet in the process!

This week, MFRS crew members stationed at our Marine Rescue Unit (MRU) situated on the banks of the River Mersey and our Community Safety Team held a series of water safety sessions in collaboration with LFC Foundation’s Premier League Kicks programme.
The sessions focused on providing young people with advice about how to stay safe around water, the role of the MRU serving the public and visitors to the region, and how to use a Throwline if you see someone in trouble in the water.
Tailored water activities were organised at Liverpool Water Sports Centre to highlight the importance of enjoying water under supervision at designated areas and activity centres.

Would you know what to do if you got into difficulty in the water?
