A piece of history redisplayed at Boston Guildhall

A historic plaque dating back to 1915 has been carefully redisplayed at Boston Guildhall, and we’re inviting residents and visitors to come and take a look.

The plaque commemorates a generous donation from the Bostonian Society in Boston, Massachusetts (USA), who contributed £100 (worth £13,343 today) to help preserve the Guildhall over a century ago. It’s a powerful reminder of the long-standing connection between the two Bostons and the shared heritage that links us across the Atlantic.

This redisplay brings that story back into the spotlight, celebrating both the generosity of the past and the importance of preserving our local landmarks for future generations.

💬 Cllr Sarah Sharpe, Portfolio Holder for Heritage, Culture and Tourism at Boston Borough Council said: "It’s incredible to see this historic plaque brought back into public view. It tells an important story about the connection between Boston in the UK and Boston in the USA.
“This redisplay is a small but meaningful step towards renewing and strengthening that relationship as we look ahead to 2030."

📍 Why not visit the Guildhall and see this piece of history for yourself?

🛳️✨ New artefact at Boston Guildhall!

We’re excited to share a wonderful new addition to the Boston Guildhall collection, a beautiful ship in a bottle model of the Privateer, now on display!

The Privateer is a vessel with a special place in Boston’s history, best known for its role in helping to dismantle the old Town Bridge in 1913. This handcrafted model is a true piece of local heritage, created by the father of Martin Baker, who has kindly donated it to the Guildhall.

This fascinating object celebrates not only Boston’s maritime past but also the skills, stories and memories passed down through local families
