If you have knowledge and experience you’d like to pass on to others, the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) could be the first step towards a career in teaching or training.

The AET is an introductory teaching qualification designed to help you develop the knowledge and skills needed to plan, deliver and evaluate inclusive teaching and training sessions.

🧠 Want to remember more of what you study? Stop just rereading it.

One of the most well-supported ways to learn is Active Recall – sometimes referred to in research as retrieval practice or practice testing.

Instead of repeatedly reading the same information, you actively challenge yourself to retrieve what you've learned from memory.

It's simple:

1️⃣ STUDY – Read through a section of your learning materials.

2️⃣ CLOSE IT – Put the material away so you can't see the answers.

3️⃣ RECALL – Write down or explain aloud everything you can remember.

4️⃣ CHECK – Go back to the material. What did you remember? What did you miss?

5️⃣ REPEAT – Revisit the topic later and test yourself again.

🔬 And there's research behind it.

A major review by Dunlosky et al. (2013) examined 10 commonly used learning techniques and rated practice testing as a "high utility" learning technique.

The same review rated rereading as "low utility", suggesting that repeatedly reading your notes may not be the most effective use of your study time.

So instead of:

❌ Read → Reread → Reread

Try:

✅ Study → Recall → Check → Repeat

Next time you sit down to study, close your notes and see how much you can remember. You might be surprised by what you know – and what you need to revisit!

📚 Describe, Explain, Analyse… What’s the Difference?

Ever read an assessment question and know the subject, but aren't quite sure what the question actually wants you to do?

The command word can give you a big clue.

🔹 IDENTIFY – Give the key information or name what is being asked for.

🔹 DESCRIBE – Give a detailed account of what something is like, including its key features or characteristics.

🔹 EXPLAIN – Go further by showing how or why something happens. Reasons and examples can help demonstrate your understanding.

🔹 ANALYSE – Break the subject down and examine the different parts, considering how they relate to each other and what the information shows.

💡 Study Tip: Before you start writing an answer, look at the command word first. Ask yourself: What is this question actually asking me to demonstrate?

Understanding the difference can help you write more focused answers and avoid spending time providing information the question hasn't asked for.

And remember, if you're studying with Brooks and Kirk and you're unsure what a question is asking, your tutor is there to support you.

🎓 From Assessor to Lead IQA – congratulations, Ryan!

We recently received a from Ryan McNally of RDM Technical, who completed his Level 3 CAVA with Brooks and Kirk a little while ago – and he's certainly been busy since!

Working within the automotive training industry, Ryan is currently an Assessor and IQA, combining his extensive automotive experience with his expertise in vocational education and assessment.

Since completing his CAVA, Ryan has continued developing professionally and has recently achieved his Level 4 Lead IQA (LIQA) qualification too! 👏

📚 Your first draft doesn’t need to be perfect.

Perfectionism can be one of the biggest barriers to making progress with your qualification.

You might find yourself rewriting the same paragraph, worrying that you haven't written enough or spending far too long trying to get an answer perfect before submitting it.

With our NVQ qualifications, there are no set word counts for your written answers.

Instead, use the size of the answer box as a rough guide to the minimum amount of content expected. Focus on answering the question properly and demonstrating your knowledge, rather than trying to reach a particular number of words.

And remember — you have unlimited resubmissions.

If your answer doesn't quite meet the assessment criteria, your assessor will provide feedback explaining what you need to develop.

So don't let the pursuit of a "perfect" answer stop you from submitting:

✏️ Answer the question in your own words
📏 Use the answer box as a rough guide
📤 Submit when you're happy you've answered the question
💬 Read and apply your assessor's feedback
✅ Resubmit if needed and keep progressing

Giving effective feedback is one of the most important skills an Assessor or Tutor can develop. It's not simply about identifying what went wrong; it's about providing guidance, encouragement, and practical advice that helps learners move forward with confidence.

Good constructive feedback should:

✔️ Recognise what the learner has done well
✔️ Clearly explain where improvements can be made
✔️ Provide examples and actionable next steps
✔️ Be specific, timely, and easy to understand
✔️ Motivate learners rather than discourage them

One technique many educators use is the 'Praise Sandwich':
