As part of our ongoing Good Safe Summer policing operation in Bournemouth, we authorised special stop and search powers yesterday in parts of the town centre to help keep everyone safe and ensure visitors can enjoy the coastline responsibly 🏖️👮🏻
An emergency power was implemented in response to recent disorder in the area, as well as additional information received about a planned gathering yesterday afternoon that may have attracted the potential for serious violence.
We worked quickly to ensure we had appropriate resources in place to meet any additional demand and took the decision to invoke a Section 60 order which further strengthened our legal powers to deal with emerging issues, alongside Section 35 of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act and the local Public Space Protection order.
A Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 was authorised for the train station, the lower gardens and parts of the beach around the pier which allowed officers to stop and search anyone in the area for weapons, without needing to explain why. It remained in place for four hours between 4.30pm and 8.30pm.
As a result, there was no disorder on the seafront and families, residents and visitors were able to enjoy the beach.
Officers were out engaging with the public and thankfully, due to early intervention, we did not have to search anyone using the powers.
We will continue to be in the area over the coming days so do approach us with any concerns you may have.
