ICN is based in the Bournemouth area and is a charity which provides a warm welcome for members of the refugee and migrant communities.

Our Christian charity believes that we should “welcome the stranger” and works to help refugees and migrants from all faiths and backgrounds to rebuild their lives in the UK. We help them to overcome obstacles in settling here. We help them by giving them advice and support on immigration, employment and in finding accommodation. In addition, we offer English classes for those who are not able to

access mainstream education. A particular recent focus has been supporting women and children through home visits and homework clubs.

Today we are looking back on a wonderful day of community, belonging and celebration 💛

The Great Community Get-Together brought people from across our community together at the end of Refugee Week — sharing food, stories, creativity, and connection.

We were especially proud to celebrate the courage and contribution of refugees and asylum seekers in our community, and to see so many people standing side by side in friendship and welcome.

From delicious food and beautiful henna, to creative activities, community stalls and plenty of opportunities to meet new people, it really was a celebration of what community can be.

Huge thanks to everyone who made it possible, especially our partners ParksFoundation, Grounded Community and Amnesty International — and to everyone who came along and made the day so special.�

She writes: “Many of us know what it feels like to experience something new. The families we support have to navigate a situation where everything is new. New country, culture, people, and systems… What I find worthwhile in my role is witnessing families become more confident”

📣 We are hiring a new Refugee Resettlement Support Worker! 📣

If you are compassionate, practical and solution focused, this role could be for you. We are looking for someone to help refugee families build safe, stable and hopeful futures - whether that is helping a family register with a GP, supporting a parent at a school meeting, preparing a property for a new arrivals or working with local partners to ensure the right support is in place.

Here’s what one of our current support workers had to say about her role:

‘Working with our families is one of the most fulfilling things I’ve been able to do over the past two years. I’ve formed amazing connections with them, and I’ve been impressed every day with how each person is able to pick up their lives and excel. It’s just an amazing job to make a difference in people’s lives but also for your life to be changed by the people you work alongside as they move towards independence.’

“An old Celtic proverb reads: It is in the shelter of each other that the people live. Human warmth and welcome and friendship are the best form of sanctuary, and we can all be sanctuary to each other.”

Sanctuary Sunday is the Sunday at the end of Refugee Week. Launched by the Refugee Council, Churches Together in Britain and Ireland, and City of Sanctuary, it is an opportunity for churches around the UK to remember the Biblical instruction to “welcome the stranger”.

Along with many Christians today, we pray:
‘I pray to you, Holy God, for all who are far from home, for prisoners, immigrants, exiles, refugees and all who seek sanctuary, that you will be the shelter of their lives and souls. Help me, and all I work with, to build communities of welcome, hospitality and sanctuary for all.

Grounded Community

A great way to celebrate the courage of refugees and migrants is to watch a film on the topic and have a chat about it.

Each year the Refugee Week Film Festival organisers curate a selection of short and feature-length films exploring themes of displacement, migration, belonging, and community. The films invite reflection, conversation, and connection – whether you watch at home or gather others for a shared screening.

This week, ICN and the Parks Foundation joined forces to host a screening to watch and discuss some of the short films selected for the festival:

‘This year marks the third year we have hosted a film night during Refugee week. We have found that this has created great conversation and given a chance to reflect with others on migration. Every year we have seen deep compassion from those attending that often leads to people thinking in a deeper way and even wanting to volunteer. Seeing people come together and discuss with love and care is really special: especially with some Service Users attending the screening as they wanted to share their experience!’

📚 Today we are focusing on the power of books to help us understand the world and make sense of our place in it.

Books are invaluable for those working to improve their English language skills when they come to the UK. Our Book Club gives service users a chance to read and discuss together and runs alongside our ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) courses.
