Another busy week for the crew at Bovey Tracey which has seen both appliances mobilised to numerous incidents.

Our 4x4 Ranger and All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) has attended several grass fires in the Exeter and Bridgewater areas. Our crew were involved in firefighting operations in hard to access areas.

Tuesday saw our busiest period due to the major incident declared in Exeter. Bovey Tracey were called to an unrelated fire in the open on the M5 which turned out to be a controlled burn. As we made our way home, we were mobilised to a building fire in Tedburn St Mary alongside colleagues from Chagford Fire Station. Although the fire was out on our arrival, the crews in attendance remained on scene to ensure there was no undetected fire spread within the building. Crews used a hose reel jet, a thermal imaging camera and small tools to confirm the area was safe.
Once again, we started our journey home but were proceeded on to Totnes Fire Station for standby duties due to the ongoing fire in the open in Exeter, coupled with other incidents in the county.
While at Totnes, we were turned out to the incident in Exeter as part of a 9 pump relief. Our crew remained on the scene into the night, ensuring there were no further flare ups and maintaining a watching brief over one of the fields involved in the earlier fire. Our crew used hose reel jets and water buckets to dampen down the remaining hot spots.

The UK is currently bracing for another heatwave and parts of Devon are expected to see temperatures over 30 degrees over the next few days. Remember that discarded ci******es, disposable barbecues and glass are some of the leading causes of grass fires that we are seeing an increasingly amount of. Please continue to be vigilant and help reduce the risk to our communities, firefighters and environment.

A busy start to August for our crew, with multiple call-outs already, including some RTCs, more fires in the open, and an animal rescue where both appliances were mobilised during the family fun day hosted by Bovey Tracey Carnival at Mill Marsh Park.

Our 4x4 and ATV are currently assisting at a fire in the open at Decoy Country Park after being requested by Newton Abbot Fire Station.

Station 20 had a busy month, attending 44 incidents. That’s more than double the number we attended last July. We also welcomed our new recruit Freddy, who will soon be heading off to his initial training. We’re still recruiting, so apply on our website if you live or work within five minutes of the station.

We attended a commercial fire right on the station’s doorstep that made national news. We also attended two large-scale wildfires, working alongside Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service and DWFireRescue

Among many other shouts, we also rescued a furry friend 🐶 who managed to get his head stuck in a driveway gate while looking for snacks

The crew at Bovey Tracey have had another busy week as we were mobilised to more significant fires in the open.

On Tuesday evening, our drill night was interrupted as we were turned out at the request of Buckfastleigh Fire Station to assist with locating a fire in the River Dart area. While mobile to the incident, Fire Control informed us that there had been calls to another fire in the Ashburton area. The crew were able to locate the fire in a field and requested more resources that came from Newton Abbot Fire Station and Totnes Fire Station. The fire was brought under control using hose reel jets and fire beaters.

On Thursday evening, our Ranger and ATV were requested by North Tawton Fire Station along with other resources to a significant fire involving farming machinery and numerous fields. The ATV provided other crews with equipment and access to the fire that took hours to extinguish.

Our colleagues at DSFRS control have seen a significant increase in emergency calls especially to fires in the open and assisting the ambulance service to gain entry to properties as the heat continues to affect the most vulnerable people in our communities. Please take a moment to check on friends, families and neighbours.

It has been an extremely busy these last few days at Bovey which has seen us mobilised to several fires in the open.

On Thursday, both Bovey appliances were turned out to reports of a fire in Rora Woods. Our 4x4 vehicle was able to get access to the fire which was deeply embedded within the woodland. Crews used fire beaters, a fogging unit and other small tools to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.

Chudleigh Woodland Fire (Saturday) – Bovey Tracey was the first appliance mobilised after multiple reports of smoke shortly after 5am. On arrival, crews found multiple seats of fire deep within woodland, with difficult access and challenging terrain. The incident escalated to involve 11 fire stations: Bovey Tracey, Brixham Fire Station, Crediton, Collumpton, Danes Castle Fire Station - Exeter,Dawlish Fire Station, Middlemoor Fire Station, Moretonhampstead Fire Station, Ottery St Mary, Teignmouth Fire Station and Torquay Fire Station. Firefighters used hose reel jets, beaters, light portable pumps and 4x4 wildfire vehicles to bring the fire under control.

Lifton Wildfire (Sunday) – Bovey’s L4P Wildfire Unit was mobilised to support a tractor fire that rapidly spread into straw fields and hedgerows, threatening the nearby farmhouse. At its height, eight fire engines were in attendance. Around 8,000m² of land and hundreds of hay bales were destroyed before crews brought the incident under control in extremely challenging hot conditions.

The county continues to see very high temperatures and dry conditions. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service have see a sharp increase in Fires in the Open as well as high profile incidents in London and Wales. Glass bottles, discarded ci******es and disposable barbecues all have the potential to start devastating fires that impact our environment and put our firefighters in considerable risk.

Bovey Tracey were one of several resources in attendance yesterday for a fire within an industrial unit.
The scale of the fire was evident as we made the short trip from the station to the incident, getting to work straight away with 51mm hoses, ground monitors and hose reel jets while we waited for more resources to arrive. At the peak of the fire, there were 8 pumping appliances, 3 specialist vehicles and numerous officers in attendance.
Crews continued to rotate in the sweltering conditions to eventually bring the fire under control, with relief crews in place to ensure the fire is completely extinguished.
We send our former Bovey Tracey Firefighters all the support and best wishes as their business recovers from this incident.

A busy weekend for our crew at Bovey Tracey which saw us mobilised to numerous incidents.
The crew were called out on Friday to assist with a dog rescue. The canine was expecting treats from the local waste collectors but found himself wedged within a garden door. The crew were able to release him safely, using small tools before the pup was sent to a local vet for a precautionary check.
Later that day, we were turned out to a fire in the open in the Liverton area. Crews were faced with a developing fire in grassland that was quickly extinguished using a hose reel jet and fire beaters, preventing any further spread. We were immediately mobilised to standby duties at Newton Abbot Fire Station due to several crews being in attendance for a fire in the open on the M5.
In the early hours of Monday morning, we were requested by police to attend a single vehicle RTC along Bovey Straights with reports of someone still trapped within the vehicle. The crew arrived to find all persons clear of the vehicle and were checked over before the arrival of paramedics for further assessment as a precaution. The crew were able to secure the vehicle and make the area safe before leaving the scene.
We have had a sharp increase of fires in the open over the past week. As the UK braced itself for another heatwave, we remind our community that the hot dry conditions will increase the likelihood of even the smallest burn spiralling out of control. We highly recommend that any kind of burns are put on hold. If you do choose to have one, make sure it is never left unattended and that you have water close on hand to ensure all fires are properly extinguished.

Yesterday afternoon, Bovey Tracey were mobilised to a report of a young person trapped beneath the rocks at Hound Tor.
After arriving and carrying out an assessment, it was discovered that the child’s thigh had become wedged between the rocks under the Tor itself after she had slipped while moving down through a tunnel. The crew were able to stabilise and reassure the child as we awaited assistance from the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team.
We worked alongside numerous agencies which included SWAST, HART, Cave Rescue and Devon Air Ambulance, as well as a specialist DSFRS Officer, during a meticulous and delicate rescue operation.
The ordeal for the young explorer lasted over 3 hours as teams worked in the heat and arduous conditions, but was eventually released from their entrapment with only minor bumps and scratches. They were assessed by Ambulance Crews before posing for a selfie with the teams that had assisted her out.
This was a fantastic example of multiple agencies working together toward a successful outcome and we extend our thanks to all those involved.

Earlier this week, we were called out to The River Dart alongside Ashburton Fire Station and specialist rescue teams from Camels Head due to reports of a person in difficulty in the water.
Thankfully, the casualty was located next to the water and was assisted to safety by crews before being taken to hospital for treatment.

During the recent heatwave, 15 people have lost their lives after entering the water. We realise the temptation to cool off during this hot weather, but the hidden dangers in the water cannot be under estimated.

If you find yourself in trouble in the water, Float to live.
Tilt your head back with your ears submerged.
Relax and try to breathe normally.
Move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat.
It’s OK if your legs sink; we all float differently.
Once your breathing is under control, call for help or swim to safety.

If you see someone else in trouble in the water this summer, remember: Phone, Float, Throw.
Phone 999 to get help.
Tell the person to stay calm and float on their back.
Throw rescue equipment to help them float until emergency services arrive. Do not enter the water.

We encourage all our community and followers to stay safe when in or around water.

Tuesday was the last drill night for FF Poppy Rothwell, who will be joining our colleagues at Wellington Fire Station next week.

Poppy joined us in 2017, becoming the first female firefighter at Bovey Tracey.

Her compassion, empathy and cheerful nature will very much be missed by the crew, but we still wish her all the best in her journey within Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service
