Bowden, Scotland

Bowden, Scotland Bowden Or of the Romans who built such a massive fort at Trimontium as the main base north of Hadrian's Wall and south of the Forth. And so you enter Bowden.

As you head on downhill towards Bowden, you may like to think about the tales of Michael Scott the wizard, who in legend, is credited with the creation of the Eildons, or Thomas the Rhymer who met the Queen of the Fairies in the glen between the Eildons and Newstead, and was spirited away to Elfland. Or, perhaps, in more rational mood, of the ancient peoples who inhabited these hills, long before

the Romans came up over the border, and who spent their lives in the forts whose remains ring the hills. Or perhaps, like most people, you will just enjoy the scenery and the wildlife which lives and grows on the hillside.

Number one attraction around Bowden Village (according to Komoot guide): Melrose Abbey "The crumbling ruins of Melrose Abbey are an impressive site. Founded by David I in 1136 for the Cistercian Order, the abbey is a beautiful example of early masonry work. In 1385, Richard II's army destroyed most of the abbey. It is also thought to be the resting place of Robert the Bruce's heart, one of Scotland's national heroes. You can find more information, here: visitscotland.com/info/see-do/melrose-abbey-p247611."

Bowden History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms: The ancestors of the Bowden family took their surname from a place name. The roots of this place name lie with the ancient Viking settlers. The forefathers of the Bowden family were Viking settlers who came to Scotland in the Middle Ages. They lived on the lands of Bowden, in Roxburghshire, where the family held lands. Around the time people were looking to adopt a surname many citizens took their placename for their surname.
