We know that deciding whether your child is too unwell for school can sometimes be difficult. Regular attendance helps children make the most of every learning opportunity, but their health and wellbeing always comes first.

If you’re unsure whether your child should attend school, the NHS guidance can help you make the right decision. Link in comments ⬇️.

Update on the Daler-Rowney fire - we are now focusing on recovery and working with various organisations to support the local community, residents who were affected, and assess the environmental impact.

Today we visited in the region of 100 properties and identified those homes where specialist cleaning is required. Following our visits and inspections, we have found the impact is limited to properties very close to the source of the fire.

We are now working with a specialist contractor to arrange the appropriate clean up. It is anticipated that the contractors will commence this work over the weekend, setting up a base in Browning Copse.

As a precaution, we have closed the children’s play area in Browning Copse until the necessary cleaning has been completed.

Residents who have already collected debris, should not place this debris with their general waste, as it will be collected by the contractors. Please keep this double bagged and separate from bin collection material.

**Urgent update – public health advice on fire debris**

Residents near to the Daler Rowney fire site are being asked not to clean up any debris that may have fallen on their homes, in their gardens, or on their vehicles as a precaution.

Updated advice just received from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), states that there may be a low public health risk associated with the debris.

As the Daler Rowney building may have a cement roof containing asbestos, it is possible that these materials may have been released in the smoke plume and deposited in ash or debris on nearby properties and streets.

Therefore, residents in the immediate area of the Daler Rowney building off Peacock Lane are advised to leave all remaining debris and ash untouched at this time.

The updated advice was received this afternoon (Thursday, 28 May). It follows the council questioning the original advice provided earlier this week, after calls from residents informing us they had small amounts debris in their garden

The UKHSA states that the risks to health from such fires and debris are low and there is unlikely to be any significant exposure to asbestos following fires involving materials containing asbestos. There is no direct evidence of long-term health risks from fires involving asbestos containing materials, but it is sensible that any asbestos containing debris is removed to minimise any potential exposure.

As a precaution, and based on this updated information, the council will be visiting all properties within a 200m radius of the smoke plume tomorrow morning to assess what clean up by professionals may be needed and to provide general advice.

We've drafted a strategy to help make sure that young voices are heard and listened to in the borough. And we want your feedback on it!

The Children and Young People’s Participation Strategy sets out how young people’s views will shape decisions, influence services and help guide how resources are used. It is for young people aged 11 to 18, and up to 25 for those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Part of the consultation includes a fun event tomorrow at Braccan Walk Youth Hub (Friday, 29 May) from 1pm to 5pm. It is open to young people aged 11 to 18 years (25 years for SEND). The day includes other activities like music, food, competitions and games. Young people will be offered a variety of ways to share their views, including vox pops and podcast-style interviews. Drop in to find out more!

We also have an online survey open for the wider community - link in comments.
