βœ… Water Safety: Know what to do if you or someone else gets into difficulty βœ…

With temperatures rising again this week, we’re urging people across West Yorkshire to take extra care around open water.

Please do not enter rivers, reservoirs, canals, lakes or other open water to cool off.

Even on a hot day, open water can be dangerously cold, deep and unpredictable. It can quickly lead to cold water shock, panic and serious difficulty - even for strong swimmers.

If you find yourself in trouble in the water:

➑️ Lean back and extend your arms and legs
➑️ Control your breathing
➑️ Call for help or swim to safety

If you see someone in difficulty in the water:

πŸ“ž Phone 999 to get help
πŸ—£οΈ Tell the person in the water to stay calm and float on their back
πŸ›Ÿ Throw rescue equipment to help them until the emergency services arrive

Do not enter the water to try and rescue someone. You could also get into difficulty.

You can also find lots more advice on our website - linked in the first comment below.

Stay safe. Thank you,

πŸ† Into the final! πŸ†

A huge congratulations to our Open Age Men’s football team, who secured an impressive 3-0 semi-final win against Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

Angus Maney opened the scoring with a brilliant drive from midfield and a strike from distance, before Wayne Walsh met a short corner routine with a first-time finish into the bottom corner.

Angus then made it 3-0 before half-time with a volley at the back post, following a flick-on from another corner.

πŸ‘πŸ½ Man of the match: Wayne Walsh

The team, managed by Danny Prue and Hassan Abrar, has been running for the last six years, with the upcoming final set to be their last game before they move on to setting up a brand-new Veterans team.

The final will take place at Sixways Stadium in Worcester on Saturday, 6th June, where will face either Dorset Prison Service or Kent Police.

A brilliant result, a proud night for the squad and a great moment for everyone involved.

πŸ”₯ Good luck in the final, team!

Do not be tempted to enter open water to cool down.

Even in high summer, waters across the UK remain cold enough to trigger cold shock. This can cause rapid breathing and reduced muscle control, making it much harder to swim safely.

Stay Safe. And, if you see someone in trouble in the water, make the right call - call 999! πŸ“²

The warmer weather is here across West Yorkshire and surrounding areas. Please enjoy it safely β˜€οΈ

Higher temperatures can increase the risk of wildfires, unsafe BBQ use, and incidents around open water.

We are asking everyone to stay vigilant and help reduce these risks by following our safety advice. Let’s all work together to keep our communities safe while making the most of the sunshine.

πŸ“Έ In pictures: More than 275 Deliveroo riders receive vital safety advice at Leeds Fire Station!

A fantastic day of partnership working, practical advice and real conversations.

More than 275 Deliveroo riders visited Leeds Fire Station for a dedicated roadshow focused on lithium-ion battery safety, delivered as part of our Buy Safe. Charge Safe. Dispose Safe. campaign.

Riders had the chance to speak directly with West Yorkshire firefighters and prevention colleagues about safe charging, buying safe products, spotting the risks linked to counterfeit chargers, and disposing of batteries safely and responsibly.

The event was the first of its kind hosted by a fire and rescue service in the North.

Most importantly, it helped us share potentially life-saving advice with the people using e-bikes/e-scooters every day.

A big thank you to everyone involved in making the day such a success.
