Hi,

We'll be having a book sale this Thursday from 4:00, the proceeds will go to refugees in Greece.

We'll be getting rid of old books and posters and taking donations.

We've also got lots of amazing books that you can borrow too.

Mayday or thereabouts will see the 1 in 12 Club Library Collective republish "Room at the Bottom", by Harry Goldthorpe. A pamphlet length text of around 48 pages: it is part autobiography and part polemic: a searing indictment of the war on the poor during depression era Bradford.

Originally published by Sunbeam press in 1959 and sold on the streets of Bradford by Harry Goldthorpe, it was republished by members of Chumbawamba on their Copy Cat Press in 1988 and subsequently by the 1 in 12 Publications Collective in 2001.

"...a book which is an authentic slice of working class history...and also passionately demonstrates the unity of collective resistance in an era of oppressively imposed social values."

- From the foreword to the 2001 edition

"...written with a fierce earnestness which merits respect." -

Review of 'Room at the Bottom' Telegraph and Argus 25/5/62

Chumbawamba also penned a song about Harry that was released by 1 in 12 Records in 1990.

After freely associating on the top floor we have decided to put on a film screening on Saturday the 26th of March. The film is selected from the collection here at the library and is called "A Day's Work for a Day's Pay". It follows grassroots activists in New York City from 1997-2000 as they fight against the workfare style welfare program being implemented at the time. We feel it is a very prescient subject since we are currently in the midst of very similar proposals from the side of the government which is targeting working people through intense austerity (especially in the light of the new Osborne program). We plan to start around 5 and the running time is 57 minutes, so time for a bit of scheming afterwards. Food and drink will probably be avails...
We want to put on some talks here soon as well, discussing diversity in the left and the Kurdish sitruggle in Rojava amongst other things.

important petition to sign; the closing down of the archives of one of the most important left-wing theorists in the 20th century (albeit many might disagree with him on many issues, including the person writing this post) represents a terrifying repression of left-wing theory in general, especially in a country like Hungary in which the government is very dangerously increasingly steering itself to fascism and accommodating neo-nazism. This is not an isolated incident. It represent another instance in the mass chain of events in Europe which aims at erasing the people's historical memory of struggle and replacing it with purely capitalist mentalities. It is extremely important to resist this tendency.

We, the undersigned, wish to express our deepest worries about the resolution of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences to close down the Lukács Archives in Budapest. Görgy Lukács was one the significant philosophers of the 20th century, an author of modernity outstanding not only in philosophy but also…
