Big news for climate campaigners!

Some fantastic news from the campaign today. 🍾🥂

‘We've just had a historic win for our climate and a liveable future for all.

The UK’s Supreme Court has just ruled that emissions from burning oil & gas must be taken into account when approving oil & gas projects.

This is a monumental decision. Until now, oil & gas developers could get away with ignoring the emissions of actually burning the fossil fuels they extract. Oil and gas projects must now take into account these emissions when seeking approval.​​

This comes from the judgment in the case against the oil drilling project at Horse Hill in Surrey. The victorious case was brought on by local campaigner Sarah Finch on behalf of Weald Action Group and supported by Friends of the Earth who intervened. Huge thanks to their determination and tireless work.

This now means that we can proceed with our legal case against the Rosebank oil field on very strong grounds and with more confidence than ever. Our case was on hold by the court pending this decision in the Finch case, because one of our grounds is also about the need to assess the emissions from burning the oil and gas. We expect to get the official permission to proceed with the Rosebank case, along with a date for our hearing, very soon.

The Rosebank oil field contains a staggering 500 million barrels of oil. Burning Rosebank's oil & gas would produce more CO2 than the 28 lowest-income countries produce in a year, combined. And now the climate impact of the emissions that will inevitably be produced from the burning of all this oil should be taken into account. If the approval of Horse Hill is considered unlawful because it failed to assess these emissions, then the approval of Rosebank should be considered unlawful too for the same reason.

Here is what Sarah Finch had to say after winning the case today:

‘This is a welcome step towards a safer, fairer future. The oil and gas companies may act like ‘business as usual’ is still an option, but it will be very hard for planning authorities to permit new fossil fuel developments – in the Weald, the North Sea or anywhere else – when their true climate impact is clear for all to see.’

We are representatives and supporters of community organisations including Global Justice Bradford, Baildon & Shipley Friends of the Earth, Bradford-Shipley Travel Alliance, Fossil Free WY Pension Fund, XR Bradford, KT Permaculture, Clean Air Bradford, Bradford Transformed, Momentum Bradford and District and others, deeply concerned about the devastating impact of the climate emergency on our local area and nationally. We wish to know that people who want to make legislation in our name are also committed to reversing global warming and avoid its impact deepening further.

For the coming General Election, we are inviting all political candidates in the Bradford District to sign up to three key climate and biodiversity pledges; to sign up to the Climate and Nature Bill, to sign up to the Fossil Free West Yorkshire Pension campaign, and to stop the Rosebank North Sea oil field.

Eli Valley's cartoon reflects not only what happens in some US Universities right now but also in some UK Universities, including Leeds. Gillian Keegan, government secretary of state for education, meets on Thursday with UK University to encourage them to 'crackdown on antisemitic abuse', with witnesses supplied by the Union of Jewish Students.

The government encourages repressive silencing of the peace movement and of criticism of Israeli policy. Just as Rafah is besieged and bombed. Disgraceful.

A letter to Leeds University from local Jewish students and staff urges the University to recognise the political nature of the occupation of part of the University, and of the attacks on it from some members of the Union of Jewish Students. “By failing to act on threats and intimidation committed against our Arab, Palestinian, and Muslim students and staff” the university has “created a campus of fear and intimidation.”

Can you share this link with anyone you know in Yorkshire who may be Jewish and questioning Israel’s war on Gaza? It is an attempt to interrupt the narrative being Jewish means supporting Israel. It is organised by a small group of Jewish people who regularly attend the Saturday Ceasefire marches in Leeds. There was another good rally today, even at the time of a national demonstration in London for a ceasefire. Thank you all!
