๐Ÿฆด Understanding Kyphosis

Kyphosis is a condition where the upper back curves forward more than normal, creating a rounded or "hunched" appearance. While a mild curve may cause few problems, more severe cases can lead to pain, stiffness, breathing difficulties, and reduced mobility.

๐Ÿฉบ Common symptoms:
โ€ข Rounded upper back
โ€ข Back pain or stiffness
โ€ข Fatigue after standing or sitting for long periods
โ€ข Reduced flexibility
โ€ข In severe cases, difficulty breathing or nerve symptoms

๐Ÿ’Š Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause, age, and severity of the curve and may include:
โ€ข Physiotherapy to strengthen back and core muscles
โ€ข Stretching and posture exercises
โ€ข Pain relief medication if needed
โ€ข Bracing for some children and teenagers whose bones are still growing
โ€ข Surgery for severe or progressive cases causing significant pain, nerve compression, or breathing problems

๐Ÿค How you can support someone with kyphosis:
โœ… Encourage good posture without being critical or judgmental.
โœ… Support them in staying active with appropriate exercises recommended by their healthcare team.
โœ… Be understanding if pain or fatigue limits their daily activities.
โœ… Help with tasks that involve heavy lifting or prolonged standing if needed.
โœ… Offer emotional supportโ€”changes in posture can affect confidence and self-esteem.

Most people with kyphosis can manage their symptoms well with the right treatment, regular exercise, and ongoing support. Early assessment can help prevent the condition from worsening.

Gastroparesis Awareness Month is an opportunity to increase understanding of a condition that is often under-recognised.

Whether you're a healthcare professional, first aider, educator, employer, or member of the public, improving your knowledge can help support earlier recognition, reduce misconceptions, and encourage people to seek medical advice when symptoms persist.

Together, we can improve awareness, strengthen patient support, and contribute to better health outcomes.

๐Ÿฆด What is Kyphosis?

Kyphosis is a condition where the upper back curves forward more than normal, creating a rounded or hunched appearance. While a slight curve is normal, excessive curvature can cause discomfort and, in severe cases, affect breathing or daily activities.

โš ๏ธ Common signs and symptoms include:
โœ… Rounded or hunched upper back
โœ… Back pain or stiffness
โœ… Muscle fatigue in the back
โœ… Poor posture
โœ… Tenderness along the spine
โœ… Reduced flexibility
โœ… In severe cases, difficulty breathing or nerve-related symptoms

๐Ÿ’™ Early assessment can help prevent progression. Treatment depends on the cause and severity and may include physiotherapy, posture exercises, pain management, bracing (particularly in children and teenagers), or surgery in more severe cases.

If you notice a worsening curve in your spine or have persistent back pain, speak to your GP or healthcare professional for advice.

As Psoriasis Awareness Month continues, let's remember that education helps improve patient care.

Whether you're a healthcare professional, first aider, educator, employer, or member of the public, understanding long-term health conditions enables you to provide better support and promote healthier communities.

Together, we can reduce stigma, encourage earlier diagnosis, and help people living with psoriasis access the care and support they deserve.

โš ๏ธ Stevensโ€“Johnson Syndrome (SJS): A Medical Emergency

Stevensโ€“Johnson syndrome (SJS) is a rare but serious condition that causes the skin and mucous membranes to blister and peel. It is most commonly triggered by a reaction to certain medications, but it can also develop after some infections.

๐Ÿšจ Early warning signs:
โ€ข Fever and flu-like symptoms
โ€ข Painful red or purple rash that spreads quickly
โ€ข Blisters on the skin, mouth, eyes, or ge****ls
โ€ข Sore throat and difficulty swallowing
โ€ข Red, painful, or swollen eyes
โ€ข Skin that peels or sheds

๐Ÿ’Š Treatment
SJS requires immediate hospital treatment, often in a specialist burns or intensive care unit. Treatment may include:
โ€ข Stopping the medicine that triggered the reaction
โ€ข Wound care and skin protection
โ€ข Pain relief and intravenous fluids
โ€ข Nutritional support
โ€ข Eye care to prevent complications
โ€ข Treatment to prevent or manage infections
โ€ข In some cases, medications such as corticosteroids or immunomodulatory therapies may be considered by specialists

๐Ÿค How you can support someone with SJS:
โœ… Seek emergency medical help immediately if SJS is suspected.
โœ… Support them with daily tasks during recovery, as healing can take weeks or months.
โœ… Encourage follow-up appointments, especially for eye and skin care.
โœ… Help them keep a record of the medication that caused the reaction and ensure they inform future healthcare providers.
โœ… Be patientโ€”physical and emotional recovery can take time.

Although Stevensโ€“Johnson syndrome is rare, recognising the symptoms early and getting urgent medical care can be lifesaving.
