Coming soon: In this house-wide exhibition, discover the legacy of Georgian owner of The Vyne, John Chute. Uncover John’s influence on and vision for the house and its interiors, positioning The Vyne as a centre of cultivated taste and personal expression.

With evocative Grecian columns and ornate plasterwork, wander through an 18th-century Neo-classical staircase hall and gaze up at the intricate ceiling. See the largest surviving collection of 16 Lattimo glass plates painstakingly hand painted with Venetian scenes. The decadent Large Drawing Room showcases crimson red brocatelle wall hangings. Also in this room, feast your eyes on the unapologetically opulent Pietra Dura, an 18th-century ebony Italian casket lavishly encrusted with semi-precious stones.

Frequented by 18th-century writer and Gothic Revivalist Horace Walpole visit the Strawberry Parlour. Horace is believed to have slept in this ground-floor dark-panelled room while visiting his close friend and fellow connoisseur John Chute. Part of an Italian Old Master work, see a rare-surviving 17th-century sketch by one of the most celebrated painters in Italian art; Giovanni Francesco Barbieri or ‘Il Guercino’.

While you’re here, don’t miss the 17th-century portrait of Speaker of the House of Commons, Chaloner Chute due to undergo painstaking conservation over the next few years. Accessible for the first time ever on the ground floor of the house, the portrait’s last known journey off site was to the National Portrait Exhibition in 1866 – 160 years ago.

In the quiet just before opening time, we spoke with Peter, a House Volunteer whose mornings at The Vyne are spent welcoming visitors into centuries of history. As Volunteers’ Week (1–7 June) shines a light on volunteers across the estate, he reflected on the inspiration, positivity and legacy behind his role.

Volunteers’ Week (1–7 June) is a chance to recognise the people who help protect and share The Vyne’s history with every visitor who walks through the door. Christine, a dedicated Day Maker Volunteer, spoke to us about what inspired her to get involved and the moments that have meant the most along the way.

Having enjoyed visiting National Trust properties for many years with my family, when I retired I decided that I would like to volunteer at our local property, The Vyne.

As well as volunteering in Visitor Reception I have thoroughly enjoyed helping with Easter and Hallowe’en trails, theatre evenings, and even operating the builders’ hoist during the roof project a few years ago!

𝐈𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐝 𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝?
When volunteering I’ve been most proud or moved when visitors mention, as they leave, how much they’ve enjoyed their visit, particularly how the staff and volunteers have made their visit so special. To me, that is the essence of being part of the National Trust.

Helping in Visitor Reception, there is usually only one volunteer working alongside the staff. I feel very fortunate to be part of a wonderful team who are so friendly, supportive and inclusive.

As part of Volunteers’ Week (1–7 June), we’re recognising the volunteers whose work isn’t always visible to visitors but is essential to the life of The Vyne. Lois, a long‑standing member of our Central Volunteer Team, shared how her love of history - and her talent for organisation - have shaped her many years of volunteering.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞?
In 2011, I saw an article in the local Basingstoke Gazette which was asking for people to become volunteers at The Vyne. I was working part time as an accountant so had some spare time.

I have also always been very interested in history, so I applied. Initially I was a Room Guide volunteer, which was really interesting and I learnt a lot about the history and stories of The Vyne.

Following a hip replacement operation later that year, the volunteer manager at the time suggested I help out in the Central Team which dealt with all volunteer related admin, queries etc and also required less standing in a cold room!

I have been in the Central Team ever since so must be doing something right! It is also great for keeping the old grey cells active!

𝐈𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐝 𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝?
One of the most exciting events I have witnessed at The Vyne was the epic roof project. It was fascinating to see The Vyne from a completely different aspect. It was such a huge hit with the visitors too. It even persuaded my husband to become a roof guide volunteer.

Me and my family made roof tiles with our names and hand prints on and we are very proud to know that they are somewhere on the roof of The Vyne, hopefully for many years to come.

It has to be my fellow Central Team volunteers Christine and Anthea and of course our lovely Volunteer Manager Caroline.

We all bring our own unique qualities and strengths to the team which in turn means we work really well together and support each other. Also, I am probably biased, but I think we have the best Volunteer Manager (Caroline) at The Vyne!

As Volunteers’ Week (1–7 June) celebrates the many roles that make The Vyne what it is, we caught up with Barry, a versatile Facilities Volunteer. From practical know‑how to cross‑team camaraderie, his story highlights the spirit of teamwork that keeps the estate thriving.

I retired in 2019 and for a while I considered the idea of some form of volunteering work but couldn't decide if it was really for me. Then during the pandemic in 2020 an opportunity arose to become a Covid volunteer and I got involved.

Whilst it was a very scary time, I found the whole volunteer experience very enjoyable and extremely rewarding. Once the pandemic had passed I was keen to find another volunteering role.

By this time my wife had also retired and achieved a long-time ambition to be a room guide for the National Trust at The Vyne. She told me that they were looking for new volunteers in several different departments and I should have a look at the website to see what was available.

So as I had a background in construction I applied for a position in the Facilities department and started a few weeks later.

𝐈𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐝 𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝?
I thoroughly enjoy working at The Vyne and every day is different, but the best part is the team spirit and cooperation between the different departments - two things which are very difficult to find in the modern corporate world.

I would say that the only way to find out if it is for you is to give it a go. You don't have to make a large commitment, you can give as much or as little time as your everyday life allows, but whatever you do it will be valued and very much appreciated. You will meet people from very different walks of life and make many new friends along the way.
