There are some places that remind you just how wild and unspoilt Cumbria can be.

Just around 7 miles from Brampton, RSPB Geltsdale is one of those places.

Covering more than 5,000 hectares, it is the largest bird sanctuary in England, but you don't have to be a keen birdwatcher to appreciate it. This is a landscape of sweeping moorland, ancient woodland, peaceful river valleys and wide open skies that seem to stretch forever.

Whether you're looking for a gentle walk, somewhere to enjoy the peace and quiet, or simply a chance to take in some breath taking scenery, RSPB Geltsdale offers a very different side of Cumbria. Every visit is different. You might catch sight of birds of prey circling overhead, hear curlews calling across the moors or simply enjoy the silence that makes this place so special.

After exploring the reserve, Brampton is the perfect place to continue your day. Take time to enjoy our cafés, restaurants and independent shops, or stay a little longer and discover even more of what our town and the surrounding countryside have to offer.

Some places aren't about rushing from one attraction to the next. Geltsdale is a place to pause, take in the views and enjoy one of Cumbria's most remarkable landscapes.

From Cobbles to Countryside

One of the pleasures of visiting Brampton is just how quickly you can leave the streets of our market town behind and find yourself surrounded by open fields, old hedgerows and countryside.

The Five Pun Fields walk is approximately 2.5 miles (4 km) and begins in the centre of Brampton at the Moot Hall before heading along Front Street and Carlisle Road. Along the way you'll pass St Martin's Church, the former library, now a private home but with its history still visible in the stonework, and Oulton House, one of Brampton's oldest surviving buildings.

From Elmfield, the route heads through the Five Pun Fields, following an old path through fields and mature trees. As the ground rises, the landscape begins to open up and on a clear day there are views towards the Lake District fells, the Solway Firth and across towards Scotland.

The walk also takes you past the Capon Tree Monument, marking the site where six Jacobite prisoners were executed in 1746, before continuing into the countryside around Brampton.

It is a lovely way to discover a different side of our town, combining countryside, views and some fascinating pieces of Brampton's history along the way.

Brampton Parish Council has produced a detailed footpaths map showing the network of public footpaths around the town, together with its Ramblings Around Brampton walking routes. Use the map to plan and follow your walk here:
