☀️ A hot week ahead across North Devon, and we know many of you will be making the most of the beaches, countryside, moorland and coastal walks. Please enjoy the sunshine safely 😎

From Braunton Burrows and Exmoor to our beaches, open fields and beauty spots, we’re lucky to have some incredible places right on our doorstep, let’s help protect them 🌿❤️

A few simple things really do make a difference:

🥪 Leave the BBQ at home and pack a picnic instead
🔥 No campfires or bonfires in the countryside or on the beach
🚭 Fully extinguish and dispose of ci******es properly
🧴 Take all litter home with you, especially glass bottles
🚗 Avoid parking on dry grass where hot exhausts can start fires

A wildfire can spread rapidly, tie up emergency services, damage wildlife habitats and put local communities at risk.

If you see a fire, call 999 immediately and use the what3words app to share your location.

Have a safe week and enjoy the sunshine responsibly ☀️

🚒 Braunton relies on its on-call firefighters – could you be one of them?

The response recently has been strong, but we’re still looking for the right people to join the team at Braunton Fire Station.

This isn’t a casual role. It requires commitment, reliability, and the ability to respond when it matters most.

As an on-call firefighter, you’ll:

📟Respond to emergencies from your home or workplace
🧑‍🚒Commit to regular training and development
🚒Be part of a professional, paid emergency service

We need people who:

🏡Live or work close enough to respond promptly

🗓️ Can offer consistent availability (daytime and weekends)

Are ready to take on responsibility and be part of a disciplined team

This role plays a vital part in protecting Braunton and the surrounding community, every bit of cover makes a difference.

If you’re interested, drop us message for a chat.

Be part of something that genuinely matters ❤️

🚒 A small incident with a big lesson…

Yesterday, we were mobilised to reports of a smell of burning at a property.

On arrival, nothing was immediately obvious, no visible fire, no clear source, but that distinctive smell told us something wasn’t right 🤔

After a systematic search, we traced it to an unexpected culprit…

A family dog had picked up a lithium battery from a child’s toy, taken it back to its bed, and given it a chew 🐶🔋 Fortunately the dog was ok!

This had caused the battery to fail and go into thermal runaway, generating intense heat and starting to burn the bedding 🔥

Thankfully, the cause was discovered early and didn’t develop any further, but it could very easily have been a different outcome.

⚠️ Safety message

Lithium batteries are now in so many everyday items, toys, gadgets, tools, but when damaged, they can become extremely dangerous:

🔥 They can overheat rapidly and ignite
💨 They release toxic gases when burning
⏱ Fires can develop very quickly with little warning

✅ Simple steps to stay safe:

🐶Keep loose or spare batteries out of reach of children and pets
🚂Avoid leaving batteries lying around or within toys that can be easily accessed
🪫Never use or keep damaged batteries
🔋 Store and dispose of batteries safely and responsibly

At Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, we’re seeing more incidents involving lithium batteries, and this is a great example of how everyday situations can escalate quickly.

A really positive outcome yesterday, but one that serves as a reminder to stay aware.

Stay safe 🔥

Braunton, we need a bit of your help!

Our fire station has always been run by local people. People who live here, work here, and are part of the community day in, day out.

The reality now is that fewer people are around during the day, and that’s when we really need cover.

We’re looking for people who can respond from home or from work, whether that’s in between jobs, working locally, or with the support of an employer who’s happy to release you when needed.

It’s not about dropping everything all the time, it’s about committing to the hours you can do and being part of a team that keeps Braunton and the surrounding area protected.

We know it’s a big ask, but it’s also one of the most rewarding things you can do.

If you’ve ever thought about it, or if you know someone who might be a good fit, get in touch for a chat.

There is still time to help us shape the future direction of the Service.

A survey to help us put together our next five-year plan closes tomorrow (Thursday 9 April).

The results will then be analysed and taken into account as the draft plan is completed this summer.

The survey is on our website

We are starting to develop our new Community Risk Management Plan (CRMP) which will run from April 2022 until 2027. Find out how you can get involved in our plans.

When you think of a firefighter, what do you picture?

House fires? 🔥
Road traffic collisions? 🚗
Wildfires? 🌾🔥
Rescues from floods? 💦
Rescuing cats from trees? 🐈

The reality is, we do all of it!

At Braunton Fire Station, our on-call firefighters are ordinary people with normal jobs who commit to being available and responding when needed. It takes time, training and dedication, but it’s a role that gives a lot back.

We’re looking for more people who live or work within 5 minutes of the station and can be part of that team.

So… what did you picture? And could you see yourself doing it?

If you’re even a little bit curious, send us a message and we’ll talk you through it.

Quick question this Easter… 🐣

If your pager went off right now, could you drop what you’re doing and help someone in your community?

That’s exactly what our on-call firefighters at Braunton do, whether they’re at home, at work, or going about their day.

It’s a role that fits around normal life, but it does take commitment. You agree hours that you’re available, carry a pager, and respond when needed.

Our crew come from all sorts of backgrounds and jobs, and we all play our part to keep the station running and our community protected.

With a bit of time off over Easter, it might be a good moment to think about it.

Could you do it? Or do you know someone who could?

Drop us a message for a chat, no pressure, just honest info about what’s involved.
