Nos da John 🌹

Theatr Brycheiniog is saddened to share that our dear friend, and unconditional supporter, John Greatorex has passed away peacefully.

John, a professional in the theatre and education sector was an inspirational producer, director and leader in theatre across Wales throughout his life. Within Powys, as the County Drama Adviser, John launched Breconshire Theatre Company in 1972, the first professional Community Theatre and Theatre in Education (T.I.E) company in Wales. His company of professional Actor/Teachers developed talent in young people, working with playwrights and theatre makers across the county.

When the county of Powys was formed, this became Theatre Powys and Powys Youth Theatre. Later in his career, John created numerous community plays with schools and communities across Wales including Brecon’s The Ring Piglet in 1996 that was created to celebrate the opening of Theatr Brycheiniog in 1997.

John played a major part in lobbying and raising funds for the creation of the new Theatr Brycheiniog. This theatre has become the important hub for the creative and social community of Brecon he envisaged. John has been a stoic supporter of all things theatrical in Brecon, a charismatic and charming character who often visited the cafe and auditorium. In the last year John has imparted his knowledge and memories to the 3000 years of Theatre in Brecon exhibition in the Gallery of Theatr Brycheiniog.

We, the staff, volunteers and performers at Theatr B will miss John very much indeed.
‘Cwsg yn dawel’ after a very well lived, wonderful, theatrical life.

John’s funeral will take place on Tuesday 30th June 2026 at 12 noon at Brecon Cathedral with a Reception at Theatre Brycheiniog at 3:00pm.

Today, we commemorate 82 years since the Normandy landings, beginning the liberation of Western Europe.

We honour the bravery and sacrifice of all those who fought and defeated fascism.

We will remember them.

Fantastic news for Brecon! Our town will benefit from a share of the UK Labour Government's Pride in Place Impact Fund.

I am already working with Powys County Council, Brecon Town Council and the community to take forward plans for the investment, and I am meeting the Council later today to discuss this further.

More info about the funding in the chat below.

I’ve written to Morrisons about the broken pavements at the entrance to their car park and store. I’m pleased to report that they have already replied to say they will get it looked at.

🌈 Happy Pride Month! 🌈

This June, we celebrate love, inclusion, and the strength of the LGBTQ+ community. Pride is a time to reflect on the progress made, recognise the challenges that remain, and recommit ourselves to building a society where everyone is treated with dignity, respect, and equality.

Brecon is at its best when we stand together — embracing diversity and supporting one another to be our true selves.

Let’s continue to champion inclusion, challenge discrimination, and ensure that everyone feels safe, valued, and proud of who they are.

And thanks to Brecon Pride for all that you do to build a more equal and united Brecon ❤️

I’ve been in Beacons Park and Pontwilym this afternoon with County Cllr Chris Walsh, Town Cllr Neil Stone and Brecon Branch Labour Party members delivering letters about the work Chris and I are leading to get the potholes on the streets fixed.

Here’s eight things Labour’s Plan for Change has delivered in Wales this week:

💷 Labour has launched the Great British Summer Savings scheme, with VAT cuts in August on attractions, cinemas and children’s meals, as well as cuts to tariffs on popular food items, reducing costs for families across Wales.

📉 Net migration has been cut by almost three quarters in the first 18 months of Labour being in office, and we’re ending the use of asylum hotels for good.

⛽ Labour has extended the fuel duty freeze, and we’re cutting red diesel rates and giving hauliers a 12-month road tax holiday. Labour is on the side of drivers.

🚲The Tywi Valley Path is now open, bringing tourism, connecting communities, and boosting local jobs in a historic area of Wales.

💵 Labour’s Defence Growth Deal will provide a £50 million boost for the sector in Wales.

🚆 This Labour Government is transforming the Welsh rail network with a generational £14 billion pipeline of projects, boosting connectivity, making journeys easier and more frequent, and supporting 12,000 jobs across Wales.

💼 Labour is supporting our SMEs across Wales by introducing the toughest late payment regime in the G7, with new powers to fine persistent late payers.

📈 Labour has secured the first G7 trade deal with the Gulf Cooperation Council, expected to boost the UK economy by £3.7 billion a year and increase wages by £1.9 billion a year.
