My name is Nick Bennett and as Public Services Ombudsman for Wales I have legal powers to look into complaints about public services and independent care providers in Wales. I also investigate complaints that members of local government bodies have broken their authority’s code of conduct. I am independent of all government bodies. I have a team of people who help me to consider and investigate complaints. The service that we provide is impartial and free of charge. We are happy to accept and respond to correspondence in Welsh. This will not lead to a delay. All our documents are available in both Welsh and English.

Not every complaint we receive is one we can investigate. But every person who contacts us deserves to be heard.

Ms A complained about an ill-fitting dental brace which was causing her severe headaches. We took her complaint through a British Sign Language (BSL) signer and via video recording.

Because Ms A's treatment had been provided privately rather than by the NHS, we were not legally able to investigate her complaint further. We explained our decision to her in a Zoom meeting, as well as in writing, and advised her how to pursue her complaint with the private practitioner.

Eighteen months later, Ms A returned to us with a different complaint about her social landlord.

As we mark 20 years of the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales, this case shows how important it is that people can access our service in ways that work for them. It also demonstrates the trust that can be built when people feel listened to and supported, even when we cannot investigate their complaint.

Nid yw pob cwyn a gawn yn un y gallwn ymchwilio iddi. Ond mae pob person sy'n cysylltu â ni yn haeddu cael ei glywed.

Cwynodd Ms A am ffrâm ddannedd oedd ddim yn ffitio'n iawn ac a oedd yn achosi cur pen difrifol iddi. Cymerwyd ei chŵyn drwy arwyddwr Iaith Arwyddion Prydain (BSL) a thrwy recordiad fideo.

Gan fod triniaeth Ms A wedi'i darparu'n breifat yn hytrach na chan y GIG, yn gyfreithiol nid oedd modd i ni ymchwilio ymhellach i'w chŵyn. Esboniwyd ein penderfyniad iddi mewn cyfarfod Zoom, yn ogystal ag yn ysgrifenedig, a rhoesom gyngor iddi ar sut i fynd â'i chwyn ymlaen gyda'r ymarferydd preifat.

Ddeunaw mis yn ddiweddarach, dychwelodd Ms A atom gyda chŵyn wahanol am ei landlord cymdeithasol.

Wrth i ni nodi 20 mlynedd o Ombwdsmon Gwasanaethau Cyhoeddus Cymru, mae'r achos hwn yn dangos pa mor bwysig yw hi fod pobl yn gallu cael mynediad at ein gwasanaeth mewn ffyrdd sy'n gweithio iddynt. Mae hefyd yn dangos yr ymddiriedaeth y gellir ei meithrin pan fydd pobl yn teimlo eu bod yn cael eu clywed ac yn cael cymorth, hyd yn oed pan na allwn ymchwilio i'w cwyn.
