FED BACKS FUNDRAISER IN MEMORY OF FALLEN OFFICERS

More than £880,000 has been raised for the families of two Cleveland Police officers who were killed on duty since an appeal was launched on Sunday.

South Wales Police Federation is encouraging members to consider supporting the online fundraiser for the families of PC Matt Blades and PC Tom Clough.

PC Clough, 38, and PC Blades, 37, died when a Volkswagen Passat collided with their marked armed response car on the A66 near Middlesbrough. Five other people also died in the collision.

South Wales Police Federation chair Phil Walker said: “This is an incredibly painful reminder of the risks our members face every time they put on their uniform and go to work.

“PC Clough and PC Blades were doing their jobs when their lives were so tragically cut short.

“The loss of two serving officers will be felt right across the policing family, and our deepest sympathies are with their families, friends and all those who knew and worked alongside them.

“The generosity already shown through the fundraising appeal demonstrates just how strongly people want to support the families through the difficult time ahead.

“I would ask South Wales Police Federation members to consider contributing if they are in a position to do so or sharing the appeal in their networks."

✍ WRITE TO YOUR MP TO SUPPORT CAMPAIGN

South Wales Police Federation chair Phil Walker has encouraged branch members to get in touch with their local MPs to help prevent the killers of PC Andrew Harper from gaining early release from prison.

PC Harper, of Thames Valley Police, died in the line of duty in August 2019 when he was dragged along a country road by a car after responding to an incident of quadbike theft.

Two of the men that were in the car were each convicted of manslaughter and given 13 years in prison.

However, they could now serve only half their sentences under the proposed early release scheme in the UK Sentencing Act.

This proposal, designed to alleviate prison overcrowding, has been widely condemned across the UK – demonstrated by the growth of a petition to block the killers of PC Harper from any early release, which has reached over one million signatures.

Now, branch chair Phil has joined other voices in calling for local MPs to be contacted so this momentum can be built on.

Phil said: “The fact that this petition has secured more than one million signatures in just a matter of weeks sends an unmistakable message: there is deep and widespread opposition to the prospect of the killers of PC Harper being released early.

“We now need people to make their voices heard."

👊 NEW FED REP KATIE IS A 'SPECIAL' APPOINTMENT FOR THE BRANCH

Special Constable Katie Williams hopes the skills and experience she’s developed during her professional career will help her support South Wales Police Federation members in her new role as a rep.

Katie is the first Special to become a South Wales Police Federation rep, taking on the post less than a year after joining the Force.

She brings with her 15 years of experience in financial services, where she manages teams, supports colleagues and deals with a range of workplace matters.

“The environment is very different to policing, but many of the skills are transferable,” she said.

“I manage a team and work with people every day, while also navigating rules, regulations and policies.

“Although policing is physically very different, I’ve found that many of the thought processes and ways of working are quite similar, which surprised me.

“I have a wide range of experience, including dealing with policies, disciplinary matters and supporting colleagues, so when I heard about the Federation role it felt closely aligned with the duties I already carry out.”

🕯 IN MEMORY

Federation branch chair Phil Walker has paid tribute to the first South Wales Police officer to die while on duty.

PC Jeffrey Pitman was just 21 when he died following a motorbike accident after he had been called to an incident on 12 August 1969.

Jeffrey joined the cadets at 17 and became a PC at 19.

In 1968, he was awarded a Queen’s Commendation for Brave Conduct, after being shot at during an armed burglary he had been called to.

His widow Diane has previously spoken about the importance of keeping his memory alive.

Phil said: “Although more than five decades have passed since Jeffrey became the first South Wales Police officer to lose his life while on duty, his sacrifice has never been forgotten.

“Our thoughts are with Jeffrey’s family, friends and all those who continue to cherish his memory.

“His service and sacrifice, and those of other officers who have died in service, will not be forgotten.”

💐 STORY OF FALLEN OFFICER SHARED BY SISTER AT SERVICE

More than two decades after the death of her brother, Joanne Woodward stood in front of hundreds of people at the National Memorial Arboretum to tell the story of the man behind the police uniform.

Joanne was speaking at this year’s Care of Police Survivors (COPS) Service of Remembrance in Staffordshire, where families, colleagues and members of the wider policing community gathered on Sunday (9 August) to remember officers who have died in the line of duty.

For Joanne, the day was about much more than remembering how her brother, South Wales Police Sergeant Mark Woodward, died. It was about remembering how he lived.

Mark died in a motorcycle accident in 2002, aged 30. But as Joanne shared his story, she spoke not only of a police officer who had dedicated himself to serving his community, but of a brother, husband, father, uncle and friend whose loss continues to be felt by those who knew him.
