Sometimes people feel as though they have hit a brick wall and don’t know where to turn.

At today’s constituency surgery in Porthcawl, my team and I listened to and supported several local people with a range of concerns.

Our team holds regular advice surgeries at locations across the Pen-y-bont Bro Morgannwg constituency, including Porthcawl, Bridgend, Cowbridge and Barry to give constituents the opportunity to speak directly to myself and my team , While it may not always be possible to resolve every issue, we are here to listen, offer guidance and see what they can do to help.

RSE IN WELSH SCHOOLS ~ PARENTS DESERVE CLARITY

The Welsh Government states that RSE must be developmentally appropriate for each individual learner.

Its own guidance recognises that children of the same age may have different needs and says factors including a child’s age, knowledge, maturity, additional learning needs and physiological and emotional development should be considered.

So I am asking the Welsh Government:

• How is developmental appropriateness actually assessed for each individual child?

• Who makes that assessment, and what guidance or professional judgement are they relying upon?

• Is an individual child’s maturity and emotional development considered before particular RSE content is taught to them?

• How is that assessment recorded or evidenced?

• What involvement do parents have in informing the school about their child’s individual maturity, needs or vulnerabilities?

• If children within the same class are at different developmental stages, how is RSE adapted accordingly?

• What happens when a parent believes particular material is not developmentally appropriate for their child?

• What oversight exists to ensure schools are meeting these requirements?

These are reasonable questions.

If RSE must be developmentally appropriate for each learner, then parents deserve to understand how the individual needs of their child are being considered.

This isn’t about creating fear or misinformation around RSE.

It is about transparency, safeguarding, parental confidence and accountability.

The Welsh Government needs to provide clear answers about what is being taught, how developmental appropriateness is determined, and where parents stand when they have concerns.

The Welsh Government claims to support inclusion and equal access, yet this service highlights how disabled people continue to be overlooked. Providing just one wheelchair space on a first come, first served basis is not meaningful accessibility; it is a token gesture that leaves wheelchair users competing for basic access to public transport.

The situation is made worse by the lack of an accessible toilet onboard. Rather than providing facilities that meet the needs of disabled passengers, the expectation is that wheelchair users must plan ahead and rely on the driver stopping somewhere suitable if nature calls. This is not equality, it is discrimination by design. Disabled people should not have to accept lower standards, reduced dignity and greater inconvenience simply because the Welsh Government has failed to make accessibility a genuine priority.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿100 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿DAYS IN THE SENEDD🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

What an incredible first 100 days it has been!
From speaking in the Senedd about disability rights, mental health, su***de prevention and the need for a dedicated men’s health plan to standing up for veterans, their families and those struggling with the transition back into civilian life.

Beyond the Senedd chamber, I have had the privilege of meeting some truly inspirational people and organisations across Wales.

💚 Visiting Tŷ Hafan Children’s Hospice
🏉 Hearing about the future plans of Barry RFC
🌾 Meeting communities, organisations and rural businesses at the Royal Welsh Show
🎖️ Listening to veterans, their families and the charities supporting them
🧠 Meeting organisations working across disability, mental health and su***de prevention

Every conversation matters. Every experience shared helps to shape the questions we ask and the issues we raise.

I am enormously proud of what we have begun ,but this is only the start.

My commitment remains clear: to listen, to speak up and to fight for people who too often feel overlooked or unheard.

Thank you to everyone who has welcomed me, challenged me, supported me or shared their story during these first 100 days.

100 days down. The work has only just begun.
