Today, we attended a ceremony marking 134 years since the Parc Slip Colliery disaster, one of the darkest days in our areaโs history.
At 8.20am on 26 August 1892, an explosion tore through the colliery near Tondu, where 146 men and boys were working underground. Rescue efforts were hampered by roof falls and, although 42 miners were initially brought out alive, the final death toll was 112.
Todayโs ceremony was a solemn opportunity to remember the men and boys who died, the families whose lives were changed forever, and the devastating impact the disaster had on communities across the area.
Their names and their stories remain an important part of our history.
