It’s been another busy Saturday for the team during what has been a particularly demanding half-term period. Despite the challenges, we remain ready to respond whenever and wherever we are needed.

Yesterday (Saturday 30 May), the team was tasked to four separate incidents, including missing children, injured persons, and the discovery of a suspected WWII explosive device. We worked closely alongside Humberside Police & Flamborough Lifeboat.

One of these incidents occurred at North Landing, Flamborough, where a person had fallen whilst making their way down to the beach.

Thanks to the quick actions of members of the public and staff from The Boathouse Café, the casualty was receiving first aid upon our arrival. The team carried out an assessment of the casualty before safely extracting them up the path and into the care of the waiting ambulance crew.

The casualty was transported to hospital for further treatment, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.

Thank you to all the members of public who assisted and all of the staff at the Boathouse Cafe, North Landing 💪.

As always, if you see someone in difficulty along the coast, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

🚨 RESCUE AT FLAMBOROUGH CLIFFS FOR CASUALTY STUCK🚨

A dramatic rescue unfolded today (29 May) at Pigeon Hole, Flamborough, after a person became stranded halfway down the cliffs in a dangerous attempt to retrieve a bag that had fallen over the edge.

Bridlington & Filey Coastguard Rescue Teams were swiftly tasked to the scene following reports of a person trapped on the cliff face.

On arrival, teams discovered that a local person had climbed down in an effort to help recover the lost bag but quickly found themselves unable to get back up, stranded on a narrow and precarious ledge above the sea.

After assessing the scene, the Officer in Charge deemed the location far too dangerous for a conventional cliff rescue. An urgent request was immediately made for the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter.

As the casualty waited anxiously on the cliff edge, Coastguard teams remained in constant contact, offering reassurance until the helicopter appeared into view overhead.

In a dramatic winch operation, the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter successfully lifted the casualty from the cliff face before landing nearby at a site prepared by The Coastguard Rescue Teams.

Thankfully, despite the terrifying ordeal, the casualty escaped without injury although understandably shaken and embarrassed.

⚠️ This incident serves as a stark reminder that no matter how familiar you think you are with the cliffs, attempting to climb down is incredibly dangerous and can put not only your own life at risk, but also the lives of Coastguard teams and helicopter crews who may have to rescue you.

📞 If you ever see someone in danger along the coast, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Following an exceptionally busy Bank Holiday period, Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team attended a total of 16 incidents over Saturday, Sunday and Monday! The busiest we have ever recorded! 🥵🤯

The final incident came late last night, when a multiagency search was initiated following reports of a person in the water off Bridlington South Beach.

Bridlington & Hornsea Coastguard Rescue Teams, Bridlington RNLI ILB and ALB, the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter and Humberside Police all responded and conducted an extensive search operation.

The search, which lasted several hours, saturated the shoreline, beach and a large area of sea off the Bridlington coast.

Following further information received during the early hours of this morning, teams, lifeboats and helicopter assets completed their search with nothing untoward found and were subsequently stood down pending any further information.

No further details will be released at this time.

As always, thank you to all emergency service personnel and volunteers involved throughout a very demanding Bank Holiday period.

🚨 WOW! what a start to the Bank Holiday weekend! ☀️🌊

With the sunshine bringing thousands of people to the Yorkshire coast, Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team has been kept extremely busy over the last 24 hours.

From broken-down jet skis 🛥️ to injured beachgoers, the team has been responding across the coastline but our final incident of the evening proved just how vital specialist Coastguard rescue skills are.

Just after 8:30pm, Bridlington Coastguard and Hornsea Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked to assist Yorkshire Ambulance Service following reports of a casualty who had fallen from the cliffs at Skipsea.

Although access to the casualty at the cliff base was possible, safely recovering them was another challenge entirely.

Using specialist rope rescue equipment, the team established a technical rescue system from the cliff top. A Coastguard Rescue Cliff Technician was then carefully lowered down the cliff face to reach the injured casualty, package them safely into a stretcher, and carry out their recovery back to the top.

Thanks to the teamwork, training, and professionalism of everyone involved, the casualty was successfully handed into the care of Yorkshire Ambulance Service and taken to hospital in a stable condition.

⚠️ Please remember : Cliff edges can be unstable and dangerous, especially during dry weather and after busy days on the coast. Keep well back from edges and supervise children and dogs at all times.

A huge thank you to all emergency services involved and to the public for your patience while the incident was ongoing.

Last night, members of the team were honoured to attend the East Riding of Yorkshire Chairman’s Awards in Beverley, where we were presented with the Chairman’s Commendation Award. The award was given to the team, alongside other emergency services, in recognition of the incident at Withernsea earlier this year.

This commendation reflects the dedication, professionalism, and teamwork shown by everyone involved in responding to that incident. While the outcome of the job remains something we reflect on deeply, the recognition from the community means a great deal and stands as a testament to the commitment shown by all those who work to protect life along our coastline.

Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Sarah and Grace Keeling, and Mark Ratcliffe, and continue to be with them as they navigate the lasting impact of that day.

We were humbled to stand alongside so many other blue light emergency services and lifeboat crews, whose ongoing dedication, courage, and service to our communities deserves equal recognition and respect.

This award belongs to every member of the team and to all those who continue to answer the call, day and night.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support.

🚨 Rescue drama at Thornwick Bay, Flamborough 🚨

Just after 12:30pm today, Bridlington and Filey Coastguard Rescue Teams were tasked to urgent reports of two people stranded high on the cliffs.

On arrival, crews discovered one casualty trapped on a narrow knife-edge pinnacle completely exposed, with sheer drops on either side and no safe option for a rope rescue.

With conditions too dangerous for a cliff operation, the call was made to request a rescue helicopter. In a tense and highly skilled manoeuvre, the aircraft arrived on scene and carried out a low-level winch, carefully lowering the winchman onto the precarious ledge. The casualty was secured in a rescue strop and lifted to safety.

The helicopter then landed at a site prepared by coastguard teams, where the casualty was safely reunited with family members.

Thankfully, despite the dramatic circumstances, the casualty escaped injury just very cold after the ordeal.

⚠️ If you ever see someone in trouble along the coast, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Some incidents stay with you.

Over recent weeks, our team has been involved in a number of difficult callouts. You may not have seen posts about all of them, and that’s because we don’t always share every incident on social media. We’re putting this message out following a number of people contacting the page asking for information after seeing emergency services in attendance. While we understand the concern, it isn’t appropriate for us to release details of incidents in this way. What we can say is that we remain busy responding, supporting, and working quietly behind the scenes whenever we’re needed.

Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team is made up of ordinary people. We have day jobs, families, and everyday lives but when the call comes, we come together, often at the worst moments in someone else’s life, to do what we can to help.

Teamwork is everything to us. The trust we have in each other, the support we give one another, and the shared determination to do our best in every situation is what keeps us going especially on the harder days.

Not every story has the ending we hope for. And in those moments, our thoughts are always with the families and loved ones affected. Those are the times that remind us why we do this, and how important it is to look after each other, both on and off the coast.

We kindly ask for understanding and respect when incidents are ongoing or recent, particularly for those directly involved. If you happen to know one of our team members personally, please don’t place them in a difficult position by asking for information about incidents they are unable to share details, and your understanding makes a real difference.

Thank you for your continued support it truly means a lot to the team.

Easter Weekend kicks off with Rescue at Flamborough Head

A multi-agency rescue unfolded yesterday (2 April) just before the easter weekend, after two people became cut off by the rapidly rising tide at Flamborough Head.

Bridlington and Filey Coastguard Rescue Teams were tasked alongside the Flamborough RNLI lifeboat following reports that two individuals were stranded and unable to make their own way to safety as the sea closed in around them.

The lifeboat crew quickly located the casualties, but challenging inshore conditions and the strength of the incoming tide made it impossible to reach them safely by boat. A rescue swimmer from Bridlington Coastguard entered the water to assess the situation, but with chest-deep water and powerful tidal movement, it was deemed too dangerous to attempt a return with the casualties.

With options running out and the tide continuing to rise, the decision was made to call in a Coastguard Rescue Helicopter. Arriving on scene, the aircraft carried out a precise winch operation, successfully lifting both casualties to safety and transferring them to the clifftop, where Coastguard teams were waiting.

This incident is a stark reminder of how quickly situations can change along our coastline, especially over busy holiday periods like Easter. What begins as a simple walk can rapidly turn into a life-threatening situation.

Please always check tide times and plan your route before setting out.

If you see a coastal emergency, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
