Have your say on plans to bring beavers back to the Brit Valley
West Dorset Wilding is inviting local people to share their views on plans to release wild beavers into the Brit Valley, as part of a public consultation being undertaken this summer.
Subject to the outcome of the consultation, the charity hopes to submit a licence application to Natural England later this year to release Eurasian beavers into the catchment, which includes the Brit, Simene, Mangerton Brook and Asker. If approved, around eight pairs of beavers could be released into different parts of the catchment over three years, with the first releases possible from autumn 2027.
Beavers are native to Britain and are considered ‘ecosystem engineers’ for the way their behaviour helps restore rivers and create wetlands. The project forms part of the wider Brit Valley Project, which could bring significant funding for nature recovery to the area if funding from Defra is secured in 2027, and staff from the project would be on hand to help if the beavers’ activity led to any problems.
We will be holding two drop in consultation events in July 2026 where you will be able to meet the team involved and discuss your thoughts directly with them.
13th July - Beaminster Town Hall, drop in from 3-7pm, talk & questions from 7-8pm
15th July - Bridport Town Hall, drop in from 3-7pm, talk & questions from 7-8pm
Residents are encouraged to attend the drop in sessions specifically if they have detailed questions or would like to have in-depth discussions with staff.
A more detailed talk will follow at 7pm each of the two evenings by Devon-based beaver expert, Mark Elliott.
Whether you want to ask how a particular location within the catchment might be affected by the beavers, or you just wish to register your views more generally, we really want to hear from you.
People unable to attend in person are encouraged to share their views through an online questionnaire, which is available on the West Dorset Wilding website, along with further information about the project and beavers in general.
