The recent weather has been great for the parks. It's lovely to see the luscious green grass return to the parks after a rather dry summer.

Special thanks to our very own Lawnmower man 🚜🦸🏼
He's been keeping the old Bowling green in excellent condition.
Perfect for picnics or games.

FOMPALF Friday and volunteers litter picked and cleared the paths.
Also a bit of weeding and pruning.

After the heavy rains, debris often gets washed down and collects at the entrances to the park.

The steps to Tyzack close and the steep slope to North street were cleared. Mostly this is twigs and leaf litter that is full of nutrients (and insects).

This was collected and put onto some of the beds in the park to improve the soil. This also benefits our bugs and insects that are living in the leaf litter already.

🚧 Accident alert!🚧

It's hard to think of the words to put with this update.🤬🙈🙉🙊

On Wednesday morning someone has had the miss fortune to crash a car through the fence that borders the Marsh park and Seagers lane.

We're not sure of the full details as yet. We are aware of the damage left behind. Not only does the car appear to have crossed a high curb but they have destroyed a large section of fencing including supporting posts and even a lamppost.

The car has been removed (apart from a substantial amount of body work), and the site made safe to pass.

As far as we are aware no other pedestrians, vehicles or property were damaged in the incident.

We did receive a message from a local resident to make us aware of the incident.

At about 8am, we heard a speeding Car and a bang. The Car had demolished a Lamppost, gone through the fence onto Marsh Park and the Driver had run off. Police attended and the car was removed.

We are hoping to get a repair to the fence and removal of damaged parts as soon as possible.🤞🏼

Please remember if you're visiting Marsh park.....
It may not have a public car park but there are several car parks just a short walk away. 🤷🏼

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

One of our volunteers has received a £50 donation from a lady called Grace. Grace is unfortunately leaving the area but wanted to thank us for keeping the park nice. She said "it’s really helped her wellbeing in the year she lived here!"

Although we don't look for payment, it is always nice to be recognised by park users in a positive manner.

Special thanks to Grace for this feedback, it means the world to us that someone can get such a positive experience from the work we do to maintain the parks!🙏🏼

We will put our volunteers heads together and think of a beautiful addition to the park that your donation can be used for.

Bowled over!
A few FOMPALF volunteers braved the bank holiday weather 🌧️☀️⛈️☀️ and continued clearing paths and working on the bowling green flower border.

The roses have now been pruned back to the original plants. The area around them has been cleared to allow light and air to them. We're hoping this will keep them healthy and free from disease. Whilst many of the roses in the park have had excellent flowers, this area has seen very few. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼 for next year.

Even with the recent heavy rains trees have already dropped some foliage.
This is a natural response by the trees to preserve moisture.

During summer's prolonged periods of warm weather, transpiration speeds up as water evaporates from the leaves faster. At higher temperatures moving air currents wick moisture away from around a leaf. In these conditions, plants need plenty of water to replace what is lost and are prone to wilting if this isn’t available.

This is part of the trees transpiration process, balancing moisture in it's system as it is required and available.
Although some weak branches (and trees/plants) may die back we are hoping the recent wet weather will bring them the much needed moisture required.

It does however keep the team busy clearing branches and leaves from the paths.

These will be added to our compost and to the flower beds adding vital nutrients to the soil to feed the plants for following years.

FOMPALF update (sorry for the delay 🙋🏼).....
Tuesday in Marsh park left us Stumped! 🤔

With slightly cooler weather conditions we decided to tackle some rather reluctant tree stumps. We've been chipping away at these for a while, but finally bit the bullet and decided to get to the root of the problem.😆

After eating a tin of spinach each
our volunteers rolled up their sleeves in true Popeye fashion.
We then rolled them back down because it was a bit chilly that morning.🤷🏼

In a flurry of energetic swinging (not that kind of swinging 😲) and digging we eventually got several tree trunks and roots out.

We even had time to identify the original rose plantings (in the left of the bowling green flower border), and start removing the offshoots.

Hopefully this should allow the energy to be concentrated in the original rose plants so next year they'll produce some beautiful flowers once again!🌹

We're hoping to add more perennial flowers and young shrubs to this area as part of our autumn park improvement plans. Not only for the benefit of our park users but also our local wildlife.🐝🦋🐦‍⬛🐿️🦡🦔

🤷🏼Has anyone lost their walking stick?🤷🏼

One of our volunteers has found this walking stick left in Marsh park on one of the benches.

FOMPALF Friday (and Thursday evening).

With no rain the parks are looking parched. Step forward our fantastic volunteers to water those areas that need it most.

Unfortunately we cannot water the whole park but we're doing what we can when we can to keep the plants healthy.

Thursday evening watering gave the plants time to absorb the water and cool down over night and through the morning. Making greater use of the water.

Friday morning was an early start (even earlier than usual 🥱).

Weeding (yes those brambles are persistent) weeding and more weeding!

Litter and paths continue to be cleared in both parks.

If you spot any anti-social behaviour please report it directly to the council and police.

Help to keep our community spaces and parks safe for everyone, all the time.

Thanks to our volunteers that have braved the heat and helped in the parks this week.

Lawyers field and Marsh park have continued to get work done despite the weather.

Litter pick.
Paths cleared.
Weeding.
Watering the flower beds and young trees.
Hedges trimmed and shaped.

Unfortunately with all the work going on we forgot to take pictures.🫣
