Brighouse Ward Councillors Update

Good evening Brighouse,
from Councillor Mark Kimberlin.

We are committed to providing regular updates on the work we are undertaking on your behalf and on matters that may be of interest to residents.

🔹 We have received a significant number of enquiries from town centre businesses. We have prioritised meeting many of these face-to-face, which has been well received. Feedback suggests that previous councillor visibility was limited, and we are pleased to already be addressing this.

🔹 We attended the Vintage event on Sunday, which was very well supported and provided a positive boost for the local area.

🔹 Trevelyan Street trees: Our investigations indicate this is privately owned land and not maintained by Calderdale Council. Land Registry searches will now be required to identify the responsible owner.

🔹 Maryville Avenue property: We are aware of concerns regarding an empty property and external overgrowth. Due to legal processes involved, this matter is being handled by the relevant authorities and solicitors. We ask residents to allow time for this to progress.

🔹 A joint visit has taken place with the Enforcement Team to review how fly-tipping is currently being managed. With incidents increasing, further measures are being explored to deter this activity.

🔹 Cromwell Bottom Nature Reserve: We are aware of concerns relating to parking and the presence of motorhomes. While the access road is Council-owned, it is not an adopted highway, which limits enforcement powers. The main car park is privately owned, further restricting direct intervention. Despite this, we are actively working with relevant partners to explore all available options.

🔹 Lane Head Recreation Park: Concerns regarding bin capacity have been raised with the appropriate department. Although bins are emptied regularly, overflow issues persist. A request has been made for an additional bin at the Garden Road entrance.

🔹️We have today had positive meetings with representatives from the Brighouse BID, as well as representatives from ESH who are carrying out the project work in the town centre.
More on this to follow.

Visit to Brighouse Vintage Day, good turn out, a mix of classic vehicles and military vehicles, with a mix of 1940's dress and military uniform, the weather was good and local people enjoying the day.
Great to see the local businesses thriving through the works going on.

Ward Councillors weekly update

Hello residents of Brighouse,

It's been a busy few weeks now since the elections, so what have your ward councillors been up to.

Apart from settling in to the relevant appointments within council and attending meetings with the council officers, we have had a lot of business and resident enquiries we have been dealing with on your behalf.

🔹️ Had a walk around Brighouse speaking to town centre businesses about the impact of the current workings and disruption in the Town centre.
🔹️Meeting with the Brighouse business committee, to discuss issues they are having around foot fall, parking, access to shops.
🔹️Dealing with over grown trees on Trevelyan Street, that are now becoming dangerous.
🔹️Working on parking charges in Brighouse, this is being dealt with centrally now at Cabinet level due to multiple actions set by the previous administration affecting the whole borough.
🔹️ Reported on potholes on A644 approach to Ludenshied/Elland roundabout, by Tesco, Briggate and Sutcliffe Lane all reported, again being dealt with at Cabinet level due to amount of work involved right across the Borough.
🔹️Supporting the Night Time Economy and approving licence applications, without impacting the town and preventing further Anti Social Behaviour hot spots.
🔹️Meeting with residents to look at improving the park next to St Chad's school in Hove edge to get the grass cut and look at improving equipment for smaller children in the Hove Edge park.
🔹️Traffic calming measures for roads being used as race tracks around Alegar Street, meeting with local residents is currently underway.

It has been an absolute pleasure supporting our residents with some of these issues and starting to implement change.

We are here for you, the people of Brighouse.

Licensed Premises Owners.

World Cup licensing hours extensions.

A bill has passed in Government to allow an extension of opening hours for England and Wales during key stages of the World Cup.

It comes into force on 8th June 2026.

The order permits pubs, bars, clubs and other on-trade premises already licensed for on sales of alcohol to stay open later on the days of specified knockout stage matches - the round of 32, round of 16, quarter finals, semi finals and final.

But only when England or Scotland are playing.

Operators do not need a Temporary Event Notice to benefit from these hours.

This is under section 172 of the Licensing Act 2003, which allows national licensing hours extensions for events of exceptional significance.

The exact dates and times can be seen at.

Walked to Brighouse centre on Friday around 4pm, popped in to some of the shops to say Hi and checked out the carparks and on street parking charges which were increased under the last administration.
I intend to put a proposal forward to change this, which will better support the businesses and people of Brighouse.
Our next full council meeting is on 22nd July which is when the proposal will be submitted.
