Brighouse Ward Councillors Update
It has been another busy period across Brighouse Ward, and we wanted to provide an update on some of the issues currently being raised with us by residents, businesses and community groups.
🔷 We have received concerns regarding traffic speeds, pavement parking and wider road safety issues on Towngate, Clifton. Enquiries are ongoing and we will continue working with the relevant highways teams to explore possible solutions.
🔷 Following enquiries from residents, we are pursuing concerns regarding the future of the Brighouse War Memorial (Nurses' Endowment) Fund and the governance arrangements associated with the charity. Discussions are ongoing with the relevant officers.
🔷 Concerns have been raised regarding pedestrian safety at the Bradford Road / Lüdenscheid Link roundabout, particularly the absence of a suitable crossing point. We are currently arranging a site meeting to assess the issues raised.
🔷 We have received reports regarding a long-term vacant commercial property in the town centre. While planning powers are limited in such circumstances, enquiries are being made with a view to encouraging improvement to the appearance of the building.
🔷 A request has been received for traffic calming measures at the Stratton Road / Wherwell Road junction. This has been referred for further consideration.
🔷 Residents have contacted us regarding concerns over a large tree affecting neighbouring properties on Daisy Road. We have requested further information and are seeking an appropriate response from the relevant services.
🔷 Following a recent road traffic collision, concerns have been raised about road safety on Clifton Common. Discussions have taken place with road safety officers regarding the issues highlighted by residents.
🔷 We met with residents regarding reports of a potential rat-run along Brighouse Wood Lane. Further assessment of traffic movements is being undertaken before determining what action may be possible.
🔷 Following issues raised regarding items displayed outside a store causing an obstruction, this has been referred to the appropriate enforcement team due to potential obstruction of the public highway.
🔷 We have been contacted by representatives of Brighouse Bridge Club, who are seeking suitable accommodation for members following the need to identify alternative premises. Suggestions have been provided and discussions are continuing.

🔷 Concerns regarding the condition of a footway in the Brighouse Hove Edge area have been raised with the relevant authorities, and we are awaiting updates on previously logged reports.
🔷 Reports of graffiti in the Clifton area have been referred to the Council's Green Spaces Team for investigation and removal.
🔷 Following reports from a business, we have raised concerns regarding a blockage beneath the River Calder bridge in Brighouse. The matter is currently with the Council's flood team while responsibility and potential remedies are assessed.
🔷 We continue to engage with residents regarding ongoing concerns at Pond Quarry, including reports relating to road sweeping, planning compliance and environmental issues. Discussions with residents, officers and developers remain ongoing.
🔷 Concerns have been raised regarding anti-social behaviour, littering, overgrown vegetation and other issues affecting a wooded area off Wakefield Road. Relevant matters have been referred to Council services, while allegations of criminal activity have been directed to West Yorkshire Police.
🔷 We have also received concerns regarding the surface and accessibility of the footpath through Library Gardens, particularly for elderly residents and those using mobility aids. A further site visit is being arranged before the matter is formally logged.
🔷 Enquiries have been received regarding signage at Brighouse Civic Hall, and we are currently seeking further information from the relevant officers.
🔷 Councillors held a Ward Forum which was well attended, with close to 40 members of the public taking part. The forum provides an opportunity for residents to meet their councillors and raise concerns affecting them and their community. These forums are currently being reviewed, as attendance had been poor in previous years. For example, the last Brighouse Ward Forum before the election was attended by only around five members of the public. If the forums continue to be well received, this positive feedback will be shared with Cabinet as part of the review.

Speeding and Traffic Enforcement Concerns
Action: Councillors to raise residents' concerns regarding speeding, anti-social driving and the deployment of speed enforcement vans with the appropriate agencies.
Brighouse Wood Lane
Action: Councillors to meet with residents to discuss ongoing concerns regarding misuse of the access-only road and explore potential solutions.
Ritz Ballroom Site
Action: Police to raise residents' concerns regarding site security, fencing gaps and potential access points with the site owner.
Matters for Further Investigation / Follow-Up
Clifton Area Highway Concerns:
Councillors and officers to continue discussions with Highways and the Transport Safety Team regarding traffic management, speeding concerns and road safety issues in the Clifton area, including Alegar Street and Clifton Common.
Litter Bins
Action: Councillors to seek further information regarding:
Bin capacity
Collection frequencies
Future bin provision
Brighouse Market
Concerns raised by traders have been referred to the Cabinet Member for Regeneration for consideration.
Action: Cllr Kimberlin to review correspondence received from a trader and follow up on the issues raised.
Wellholme Park
Concerns regarding the condition of the park gate have already been raised with the Cabinet Member for Regeneration and remain under review.
Cromwell Bottom / Areera Site
Action: Cllr Commons to discuss concerns regarding parking, storage activities and land use with Planning Officers to determine whether any further action is required.
Cromwell Bottom Drive / Elland Road Junction
Action: Concerns regarding overgrown vegetation and restricted visibility at the junction to be reported to Customer First for investigation.
🔵 I also wanted to make you aware of the Calderdale Ward Forum Grant Fund, which is currently available to support local community projects and activities.
Each ward in Calderdale has a grant budget available, with organisations able to apply for up to £500 towards projects that benefit residents and communities. Applications can be submitted throughout the year and are considered by local Ward Councillors.
