This week we're celebrating all the things our Sport Welfare Officers have achieved across Sussex as part of the national Sport Welfare in Action campaign 👏

The work of the SWO Network is making a real difference to the safety and experience of everyone taking part in sport and physical activity across Sussex.

From visiting clubs to provide hands-on safeguarding support, to delivering training on topics like neurodiversity in sport, mental health, and dealing with lower-level concerns - our Sport Welfare Officers are helping welfare leads, coaches and committee members feel more confident and better equipped.

They also provide clubs with resources and guidance to strengthen their safeguarding practice, and create opportunities for clubs and organisations to connect with each other through forums and events.

Funded by Sport England and the National Lottery, the SWO Network exists to help clubs, NGBs and community sports organisations create safe environments and positive experiences for children, young people and adults.

Swipe through to see what's been achieved 👉

If you're involved in running a club or community sports group, support is available - get in touch to find out how the SWO Network can help your organisation. Just email [email protected]

📢 Job alert: The Active Hastings Team are recruiting for two new Community Builder roles as part of the Sport England Place Expansion Programme Development Award, led by Active Sussex.

These roles are a unique opportunity to play a critical role in shaping the future of physical activity provision and address inequalities within Hastings.

By listening to, and working closely with local communities who find it harder to be physically active, these Community Builder roles will work to develop a deeper understanding of barriers preventing inactive people from being more active in their communities and help shape future investment that can best support people to enjoy moving more.

Great news for school sport! 🏃‍♂️⚽

The Government has announced more than £1 billion of investment in PE and school sport over the next three years, including £200 million to improve school sporting facilities.

As an Active Partnership, we'll be working with the government and local partners to make sure this investment makes a real difference for children and young people across Sussex.

We know that positive experiences of sport and physical activity at a young age help build lifelong habits - and that school sport facilities benefit whole communities, not just pupils.

We look forward to hearing more detail and playing our part. 💪

The Sussex Parallel Youth Games lit up K2 Crawley this week - and what a joyful, energetic day it was!

Fourteen schools took part in nine inclusive activities, from swimming and golf to street soccer, trampolining and boccia. The smiles said it all.

Lilly from Woodlands Meed told us table cricket was “really fun”, while Rhys in Year 7 loved cricket because “to get more active and get more energy is the best bit.”
And how about Manor Green College’s superstar swimmer, Zanayah, who won FIVE medals and said: “I do not give up. I keep going and always try my best.”

Teachers were bursting with pride too.
Penny from Woodlands Meed said: “There was such camaraderie between the schools… it’s a highlight of my academic year.”

A massive thank you to all the organisations, volunteers, young leaders and the brilliant K2 team who made the day possible — and to England Disability Cricketer Alfie Pyle for inspiring everyone with his message to “have fun and try again.”

What a celebration of ability, confidence and community.

Today is Wear It Green Day, and the Active Sussex team is proudly joining Mind’s Mental Health Awareness Week campaign by wearing green to show our support.

It is a simple action, but a powerful reminder that mental health matters in every space we work in, from community clubs to leisure centres to grassroots sessions.

For our partners across Sussex, here are the key messages we’re championing today:
• Movement supports good mental health - small, accessible actions can make a real difference
• Creating welcoming, understanding environments is essential - people participate when they feel safe and supported
• Signposting matters - knowing where to direct someone who’s struggling can change their experience
• We all have a role to play - coaches, leaders, volunteers, organisers, every one of us

Thank you to everyone across the sector who continues to champion positive mental health and create spaces where people feel able to move, connect and thrive.

If you know a young person who loves sport and wants to make a difference please flag the below opportunity!

Coach Core Sussex apprenticeships are now open - and this could be the perfect first step into coaching and community sport.

Coach Core helps young people who face barriers get real experience, earn a wage, learn on the job and join a supportive group of apprentices across Sussex.

By sharing this opportunity, you’re helping a young person take a life‑changing step and helping build the future coaches, leaders and role models our communities need.

Please share with parents, schools, clubs, youth groups and community networks.
Your share might be the reason someone sees this.
