Today is and - days which are hugely relevant to the work we do at First Base Day Centre.

We serve hot meals daily to people sleeping rough and served approximately 7,500 in the past year🍽️

Additionally, we provide necessary essentials to our clients, including menstrual hygiene products, contraception and pregnancy tests. This allows our clients to maintain their dignity as well as their health whilst homeless.

BHT Sussex’s Work Placement Programme would like to say a big thank you to South Downs Leisure for taking on a WPP participant. The programme supports people living in supported accommodation, who have been impacted by homelessness, to gain work experience as a step towards employment.

The team at Southwick Leisure Centre recently hosted a placement that gave the participant a wide range of experience within their operations and fitness teams. With a welcoming and supportive environment, the participant made full use of this opportunity. The participant is now actively seeking work within the sector and with the manager feeding back that he ‘showed a great work ethic and was professional throughout’ there is good reason to think he should soon secure employment.

What's your message of hope?

We've been asking our members of staff what makes them feel hopeful to build a 'wall of hope' in our head office 💕

Here are some of the things our hopefuls have shared throughout the Week of Hope.

Hope happens here and A Million Acts of Hope are proving it by sharing acts of hope from up and down the country! Spread hope not hate!

To mark the end of Mental Health Awareness Week, we want to highlight our peer mentor groups in West Sussex 🧠

Our peer mentors are volunteers who have lived experience of mental health struggles. They then use this lived experience to support others with their mental wellbeing. One way they do this is through social community groups.

Our peer led walking group has just celebrated running for 10 years and our peer led craft group will also soon be turning 10! 🎉

These are both being run alongside other peer led groups, all of which allow people to talk and connect with someone who understands how it feels to go through difficult times and mental health challenges.

Thank you to all our Peer Mentors, past and present!

This Mental Health Awareness Week, our latest blog from BHT Training invites a different way of thinking when Working with Complex Emotional Needs. Trainer, Chris Barker, asks us to consider what might be happening underneath the behaviours we see.

Rather than focusing solely on risk, diagnosis, or behaviour, Chris’ blog encourages a shift towards curiosity, compassion, and context. Drawing on trauma informed and non pathologising practice, it looks at how language, labels, and service responses can either deepen distress or create the conditions for understanding, connection, and more compassionate support.

As well as taking action to support our clients' mental health, we also support the mental wellbeing of our employees. We have an extensive employee benefits scheme that includes a 24/7 employee assistance programme. We also consider flexible working and working from home (where possible) to promote a healthy work life balance.

Additionally, many teams enjoy annual team days out in summer, including trips to the beach, Seven Sisters, Wakehurst and many other places of beauty in Sussex.

We pride ourselves on fostering an environment for our mental health to thrive at work.
