🚨 A busy few days for Brighton RNLI volunteers

Over the past few days, Brighton RNLI's volunteer crew have been tasked to two separate incidents off Brighton seafront.

On Saturday evening, the crew launched to reports of a woman in difficulty clinging to a yellow buoy offshore. The lifeboat arrived quickly, but members of the public had already assisted her safely back to shore, where she was left in the care of the South East Coast Ambulance Service.

The launch was a memorable one for volunteers Radek and Rob (pictured), who completed their first taskings as helm and T1 crew respectively.

Then on Monday evening, the crew launched again to assist two paddle boarders approximately 200 metres west of Palace Pier. Sharing a single paddle board and without lifejackets, the pair had drifted further offshore and were unable to make effective progress back to shore due to the conditions.

Both casualties and their equipment were safely recovered and returned to Brighton Lifeboat Station. Thankfully, no medical treatment was required.

These incidents highlight how quickly a day by the sea can take an unexpected turn.

⚠️ If you're heading into the water:
• Avoid mixing alcohol and water activities
• Wear a lifejacket or suitable flotation device
• Check weather and sea conditions before setting out
• Carry a means of calling for help

📞 In a coastal emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

A huge thank you to our volunteer crew, and to the members of the public who assisted before the lifeboat arrived on Saturday.

With hot weather ☀️ due to stay for the next few days, please ensure to do the following when going to the beach 🏖️

🛟Choose a lifeguarded beach if you can
🚩 Swim between the red and yellow flags
🕥 Check the weather and tide times before you go
📖 Read local beach safety signs
💨 Don’t use inflatables in the sea if it’s windy. They can get blown offshore stupidly fast.

Even when the air feels hot, the sea can still be cold enough to trigger cold water shock. That can make you gasp, panic and struggle to swim properly if you jump in too fast.

If you get into trouble in the water: Float to Live

1. Tilt your head back and keep your ears submerged
2. Relax and try to control your breathing
3. Move your hands and legs gently to stay afloat
4. Don’t worry if your legs sink a bit, that’s normal
5. Once you’ve got your breathing back, call for help or swim to safety if you can

If you see someone else in trouble:

Phone, Float, Throw

* Phone 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard
* Tell them to float on their back
* Throw them something that floats
* Don’t go in after them yourself unless you’re trained, because that’s how one emergency becomes two.

☀️ It’s hot out there, Brighton!

With temperatures soaring and many families enjoying the coast this half term, please remember one thing if you’re heading near the water: 🌊

If you get into trouble in the water:

🔹 Tilt your head back with your ears submerged
🔹 Relax and try to breathe normally
🔹 Move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat
🔹 It’s OK if your legs sink, we all float differently
🔹 Once your breathing is under control, call for help or swim to safety

Cold water shock can happen even on the warmest days. Knowing how to float could save your life.

Enjoy the sunshine and stay safe out there 🧡🥵

“Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever remembered.”

Three women tragically recovered from the sea off Brighton last week have now been identified as Jane Adetoro, and Christina and Rebecca Walters.

Jane, Christina and Rebecca were sisters, from the Uxbridge area of London.

The thoughts of everyone at Sussex Police are with Jane, Christina and Rebecca’s family, as the investigation continues into their deaths.

Chief Superintendent Adam Hays, Divisional Commander for Brighton and Hove, said: “I know this incident has had a profound impact on the local community in Brighton, and across the country.

“I’d like to reassure the public we will leave no stone unturned in our investigation to understand exactly what led to the tragic events of that Wednesday morning.

“This investigation will continue in earnest, with Jane, Christina and Rebecca’s family at its centre. I would ask that they are given the privacy to come to terms with this terrible tragedy.”

Their father has paid tribute to his ‘beloved daughters’ 👉 https://orlo.uk/uESBd

A huge thank you to Churchill Square for kindly allowing the RNLI to collect there this weekend 💙

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who stopped to chat with the crew, learn more about the station, and donate to support our lifesaving work.

Every penny raised helps our volunteers continue launching 24/7 to keep people safe along our coastline.

And of course… we couldn’t resist sharing another brilliant Fatboy Slim moment 📸🚤

Guy Addington from the water safety team has been in Brighton today to launch our Float to Live campaign.

It was windy today but we’re due some lovely weather for the bank holiday weekend and are expecting lots of people to be out enjoying the coast.

Please share our safety tips with your loved ones:

Float to Live could save your life.

Remember:
- Tilt your head back with ears submerged
- Relax and try to control your breathing
- Use your hands to help you stay afloat
- It’s okay if your legs sink, we all float differently

Practice these steps at a supervised location, like a swimming pool or lifeguarded beach so you know what to do in an emergency.
