Fire safety isn’t new.

After the Great Fire of London in 1666, the city enforced rebuilding with brick and stone to reduce fire spread, one of the earliest examples of passive fire measures.

But the modern push for proper firestopping really accelerated after the 1975 Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant disaster, where inadequate sealing materials contributed to the incident.

It’s a reminder that standards evolve and why doing things “the way they’ve always been done” isn’t good enough.

“Firestopping” has been used in our industry for decades.
It’s the go-to term for sealing around pipes, ducts, or cables that pe*****te fire-rated walls or floors.

But here’s the challenge: It can be too generic, and outside the industry, it can be misunderstood.

As buildings become more complex, accurate terminology matters.

Do you still prefer to use the word firestopping, or do you prefer shifting to more specific terms?

In every building, safety starts with one key principle: keep the fire where it starts.

Compartmentation divides a building into controlled areas using fire-rated walls, floors, and doors.
Done right, it protects escape routes, slows the spread of smoke, and buys critical time.

It’s one of the quietest systems in a building but also one of the most powerful.

Have you ever seen a project where compartmentation issues only showed up late in the build?
